Starter connections

Hey guys. I've looked all over and can't find anything so I'm sorry if its out there and I missed it. Re-installed the starter and dumbass me didn't label the wires. Thought I had it hooked up right but when I connected the neg. battery cable it started smoking. Anyone got a pic they can load showing where the 2 big *** cables go on a 85fb gsl? thanks.

This should help.. check to see that the starter itself is wired correctly as well, because there are some oddballs floating around out there.

I missed that you're re-installing, so it probably not miswired. Here's how the cables should be. Grab a fire extinguisher before hooking it up again.. I was just checking out someone's album with a silver fd that burnt to a crisp..

Ok, there is a thick black wire that obviously goes to the starter. Then there's the black wire with yellow stripe that appears to be the neg. battery ground. Where does it go, because when I hook it up to 2, battery smokes. It won't reach 3, referring to the terminals on the solenoid. I don't see anywhere else for it to go unless i've missed a body ground somehwere.

Looking at it upright (mounting position) ... On my 79 the thick cable with the angled looking ring terminal goes on the left. The other colored wire with small ring terminal (12 gauge?) goes on the right. Signal with the small clip goes on the male clip connector in the middle.

BTW if you have more than one thick black cable one bolts under the starter on the transmission bell housing.

That was it. Thanks a ton. I didn't realize I was overlooking something so simple.

Working like a charm now. Thanks to everyone for their help. Only need an exhaust system and she'll be back on the road.
