OK, so apparently some people have had problems fitting a 6.5 in the rear of their 7. They said that 5.25 was what fit in their car. I know a 6.5 fits fine in mine, so who knows. It is for sure 4 inch up front though lol

IIRC, the rears are actually an odd size at 6". I remember trying to fit a 6.5 in there and they wouldn't fit. 5.25 fit in there, but the hole was too big. I'm pretty sure I measured the stock speaker and it was 6". Don't quote me on that though, this was 2 years ago. Fronts are 4" for sure.

My stock speakers in my '85 GS measure 5.25" across the cone, and 6.25" across the frame. 6.5" replacement speakers would not fit, but 5.25" fit fine.

I fit 6.5" in the back of mine with no issues, 5 1/4" in the front with some trimming.

This thread won't be very helpful to the original poster because of the conflicting information. All I know for sure is that the 6.5" speakers I bought for the rear would not fit so I took them back and got 5.25", which fit fine. I have an '85 GS..the original poster was asking for info about a GSL-SE...maybe there is a difference there?

6.5" would not fit in mine...5.25 fit fine. So there IS a problem. Granted, I bought cheap speakers, but anything listed as 6.5" should fit in a 6.5" application.

No speakers up front, Infinity 6 1/2's in the rear.

I did have some very minor triming to get the 6.5 inch speaker to fit flush. When I checked the application manual at Best Buy they indicated that 6.5 diameter is the replacement for the rear speakers. However, I agree with the above comments that the factory rear speakers are not 6 1/2 inches.

I put Infinity Kappa speakers in my '84 GS

4" 2-way in front
6.5" 3-way in the rear

Perfect fit and zero drilling on all speakers.

Mine's a GSL-SE, and I also went through Crutchfield. Same results as posted by John.

Not to hijack, but can I ask a quick follow on guys? When you installed your new speakers, did you place them in the stock mounting location, or did you mount them over the stock speaker grills?

Did the 2ohm impedance on the Infinitys work with the stock stereo? or did you change the deck too?

STOCK rear speaker is 6 inch, plenty of room for trimming to go to a 6.5.
