Sound insulation material

I’m going to be working on the rear interior of my SE. Now that I have a new seal for the rear hatch window, and I’m sure water won’t leak in like it was before, it’s time to work on the interior materials. I’ve ordered a new carpet kit. The wool like sound material that originally came in the car was disgusting. It crumbled and fibers went flying everywhere. What have you guys found to be a good replacement for it?

I’m also planning on putting down some butyl sound deadening material, like Dynamat or B-quiet material. I’m wondering if I go that route do I need to bother with the wool insulation like material?

Not done this, but a thick carpet pad material would work and be similar to the stuff that was there.

Example from Amazon...

From a sound deadening perspective, if you used butyl the wool insulation would not be required, but in my optionion, I think it makes the carpet wear better. The rear has a big think rubber/woll mat in the back it really goes help. I used both when redoing my 1985. I put 3/8 inch compressed carpet insulation meant to go under a big rug. My original carpet was great, so I used butyl/insulation/carpet.

The padding used under automotive carpet is called Jute and is available thru various suppliers.

I went with NVX instead of Dynamat when I did my suv many years ago. It was thicket and less expensive and it worked really good for the sound deadning. Try going on Sonicelectronix to see what would be the most cost effective for your setup.

Wool type insulation works by absorbing sound.

Dynamat type "insulation" works by adding a damper mass to the sheetmetal to help prevent the metal from becoming a speaker. You are only supposed to use a little square of it in the middle of a panel. If you look, you will see that Mazda has already used lots of tar sheets already, applied before paint. Same product.

Use products for their purpose - get the wool like stuff for carpet insulation.
