Some things are easier 2nd time around...

So I finally got my 85 GSL back home this weekend (thanks to the banana man ) and started pulling the engine today. Last time, iirc, it took me about 10-12 hours spread over 2 days to get it ready to pull.

2 hours into it this time, and after the starter wires, A/C compressor and alternator, all that's left are the engine mount bolts and she'll be out. Unfortunately, the rain started, so I can't brag about being the man and getting it pulled in 3 hours, but I'll be sure and taunt if the rain lets up early enough.

Thanks to everyone here who helped make me the SMAERTY MAN I am today

We're considering taking shots during the rebuild/streetporting for possible inclusion in a tutorial. However, I'm not sure how much time I'll have to actually do the tutorial end. It's nice in theory though, right?

I imagine even pics with captions would be very useful to those of us that would do it but don't know how =)

Well, 3 hours, 15 minutes. I'll take that any day of the week

My one-man pull necessitated that I either draing the tranny or come up with a nifty method of keeping the fluid in.

Turns out that some paint caps are too big, while others snugly fit around the rear flange of the tranny. Secured with some wire and twine, it held the fluid in no problem at all

So yeah - back to the writeup. We'll try and cover tear-down and build-up of an engine and toss the porting info into another tutorial.

I might (and I stress the word might) video tape the procedure so that there's a true 12A rebuild/teardown video. However, it'd be certain to be a large download (as even sorenson compression is probably going to leave it as a large file if I keep the quality high enough to see details), and I only get 4GB transfer a month...

Hence my stressing the might part

Time permitting, we'll tackle the tear-down this weekend and snap some pics.

Cheers

Paint cap over the tranny output? Come on.. that's what oil dry was invented for! LOL No, I did the same thing when I pulled the donor engine for my '7. I forgot about it when I pulled the blown one out, though... these engines sure do come out easy, too.. only non-engine parts that need to be removed are the hood, rad and metal shrouds for the rad.. lot easier than having to take out a core support...

It's taken me close to 3 days to get my engine ready to pull, but only about 20 hours total of work in my gsl-se, Unbolting the tranny is the final thing i have to do and it will be ready.

If you have a hoist, I recommend leaving the tranny attached. It makes it easier to carry with 2 people, makes it easier to pivot, and is more easily taken off when the engine is out of the vehicle.

My 2 cents having done it both ways

Not to mention mating the engine to the tranny when you drop it in sucks
