Simple gauge question

I don't know all that much about gauges, other than the fact that I need/want them. I'm thinking of just doing Oil temp, Water temp, and Oil pressure for now. My question is, should I be looking at mechanical or electrical? I prefer the idea of electrical simply because it seems easier, but what is the general consensus out there? TIA

get electrical gauges. BUT..

Good luck finding ANY sending unit with metric threads though. What you'll have to do is this.. drain all your oil, and drain all your coolant. Pull the pressure sending unit (should be a bell looking thingey just south of the oil filler neck. Pull the automatic choke release thing, which is on the top portion of the water pump housing, and as for oil temp, I'm not sure, maybe you could just take one from inline to the front mount oil cooler.

Anyhow, take these to a hardware store and find fittings that have the same exact size and threads on the outside. Then you'll have to drill a hole through them and then tap that hole so that the (standard threaded) sending unit can screw into your metric fitting that you just bought.

The water temp, I'd measure it at that automatic choke release point on the top of the water pump housing. The oil pressure, where you pulled that bell looking thingey off of by the oil filler neck.

OOOOOOOOhhhhhh! I'LL TAKE 4!!! Oh wait, sorry, got caught in the moment. But I will be ordering that next week with my gauges.

Wow, and with it being right below the oil filter, talk about simple wiring.

Thanks directfreak.

Both the oil pressure and water temp are also right below the oil filter already, plus the threads on both are NPT pipe thread, which comes with every sending unit I've ever seen.

is the water temp npt? I didn't try, I figured everything on there was a screwey thread. Too late now, but for future reference..

For the water temp, you can put it in the front side plate. On the spark plug side, down towards the bottom of the plate, there is a recess. In that recess is an Alen head plug that is NPT. I'm not sure of the size, but I used the smaller adaptor that came with my Autometer and fit perfectly!

Actually, it's not 1/8" NPT like I thought. Now I gotta go look my friends car to refresh my memory.
