Side Fire Plugs?

So Peejay's post in the fuel mileage thread and the tutorial on mazspeed piqued my interest. Basically you take a one prong plug, cut it down and gap it. I kind of cross referenced the Autolite plug Peejay recommended.

Autolite AR3923
Bosch F6DC
Champion RC9YC
NGK BKR6E (Ref. 6962)

Anyhoo, anyone else wanna chime in on this?

Why not?

Not saying anything bad about NGK, but you can find Autolites anywhere, and I've had no problems with them, and I used them for about 50k in my '85 and about 20k in my '80.

Peejay said something like .035". Haven't tested out any of the plugs yet so no guarantees on the lengths, etc.

And what's going on with the beast? I haven't even seen it up close yet.

Are you using the stock coils in both of your cars?

I ran these modified motorcycle plugs for a year without problem but their only siginificant advantage is price which is somewhat negated by having to buy a thin walled socket head in order to install them. I'm back to stock plugs now .. it was an interesting experiment.

Doc, he gapped them wide because he could get away with it, thanks to the MSD. He said they'd even fire when fouled. He could also get several years of service from a set of plugs because the CDI spark doesn't care whether the plug electrodes are sharp and new, or old and rounded. Also the set of plugs were stuck in the rotor housings.

That's all from memory. We'll see how accurate I was when he chimes in.

Jeff, you must of mis-read me. Peejay is gapping them at .035 which is .020 narrower than stock. That's why I'm confused.

you know pete, i've never had great luck with the plugs in any rotary. they're great in my 63 Falcon but the idle is better in the 7 with the ngk's(in my experience) and i feel more comfortable using a factory reccomended plug.

Ah. thanks. wanna PM me when you do put them in? let me know where you got them, if they work well etc.

I'm thinking I'll my car tuned at Wall's for auto-x because it's running like **** and I'm tired of the Holley problems... In which case I should do Cap, rotor and plugs before I go in...

The beast is up and about, but my construction job didn't start til last week and I was flat broke forever. With gas at $68 a fill, I couldn't afford o leave the house. Should get out to next auto-x or MMC meeting...
