Shutter Valve

I have been having a problem, and after searching the site, I believe I have figured out what it is. My fb won't hardly idle, and it makes a god awful noise. I am just about positive that it is the shutter valve. I have seen several posts that say to just plug it, and I was just wondering if this solution is appropriate. Thanks in advance for any input.

damn right its approriate.. first try wiring it open (the actuator is on the driver side of the carb, right underneath it on the intake manifold. then, when you want true power, take off the carb and remove the butterfly valve (or the whole armature)...

its not the much power really, but it helps. does you baby also surge a little while cruising (under light throttle loads?) thats another sign.

if it backfires when you press the gas, check your apex seals instead.

She has always had what feels like a dead spot in the accelerator. If I try to maintain a real low speed, or if I let off the gas at high speed, and then step on it again, it will surge a little.

I had the bucking moaning shutter valve problem a couple years ago and solved it with a rubber cork in the appropriate hole in the air cleaner chamber.

Yeah, those are the symptoms, and biffles got the easy solution: a rubber chemistry cork or a cork wine cork applied in the air cleaner box to the inlet hole for the beastie.. i forget which one it is exactly, but its almost directly above the shutter valve.

Just remove the lid and cartridge while the engine is running and plug a hole with your thumb and soon you'll find the right one.

Mazdatrix has complete R&R instructions for the shutter valve on their website.

Gotta bump this with a question.

My shutter valve was already removed when I bought my car, and those screws on the butterfly inside the intake were pretty badly stripped.

How should I go about just removing that butterfly shutter thing? It seems to be just fine right now with it loose.

Yeah mine made an attrocious sound and it constantly would surge and bog. Now it's so smooth and quiet that I had to look at my guages to make sure she didn't shut down on me every time I stopped

I've never heard of a spray to unstick it. Plus I'd be afraid of getting foreign liquids into the engine.

Glad I bumped the old thread to generate more interest and I already got my answers.

YOU DO HAVE TO BLOCK OFF WHAT YOU REMOVE!

It is removed as is the air pump and all the crappy wires.

Looking at the opened air cleaner the hose closest to the drivers seat is the one to discoonect, I just put a bolt into the rubber hose for now and its a different car. Factory reason for this valve is to acheive about 3% better economy when you are off the throttle, but once it fails, get it out of there.

In the rats nest tutorial, it is not removed, only both ports capped.
If you remove it, you have a hole to plug in the manifold, and the butterfly in the primary that the valve controls will probably stay shut unless you fix it open or remove that also, which I've read on here is not good.

Here is the valve circled in blue. Picture courtesy of a unknown user posting a picture.

JB Stickweld or Quicksteel should work just fine. I once used quicksteel to patch the port in my middle housing because my friend punched a hole in it while porting it. That was about 5 years ago and held up good! I sold the car three years ago so who knows how its doing now

Yeah just remove the valve, and then seal the shutter itself in the open position. If you removed the shutter it would mess with the flow design.
