SE tranny

Alright this will probably sound like a newbie question and it is, but i couldn't find the answer in a search. What are the differences between a GSL tranny and an SE tranny? I am buying my first rex this weekend (an 83 gsl) and it already has an SE tranny, so I'm wondering what the differences are. Thanks in advance for the help.

Not much. Taller 5th gear is the best difference. IT also has a vented bellhousing FWIW

I have a related question. I have an '83 GS, and the tranny has been swapped. I do not know what the tranny is from, but it fits almost perfectly. The only difference I can see, is the shifter is about 1/2 to 1 inch further back the the stock location. I can see where someone has modified the opening in the floor, to allow this to fit.
Any way I could ID what the tranny originally came from?
Could this be from an SE? Or even a newer model?

That would be a 2nd gen tranny. If its smooth on the outside like the 1st gens, then its a non turbo 2nd gen trans. If it has ribs on it and a removable bottom plate, then youve got a TII tranny...lucky you!

The 2nd gen non turbo 5 speed isnt that far off from the 1st gen 5 speed.Someone either used it because they couldnt find anything else,or they bought it rebuilt not knowing it was for an FC.

Well, I don't remember for sure, but I think it's got ribs on the case. I sure don't remember a plate, though. My guess is, it was bought rebuilt by someone that just wanted a tranny. I know it has been into, as it has red silicone at all the mating surfaces. Hafta look under it again. Needs a tranny mount, that would be a great time to check it closer.
Thanks for the info.
Are the ratios different for a second gen trans? 75 MPH = about 3900RPM, assuming both the Tach and speedo are close to accurate.

75mph/4000rpm sounds almost about right for a stock SA/early FB transmission.

I once had a rebuilt SE tranny that was assembled with a 2nd gen main case.It had the 2 circumferential ribs around the bellhousing like the FC,but the shifter tower was definately 1st gen.I wouldnt doubt that trans rebuilders sometimes goof, or interchange parts of the Type M rotary 5 speeds, they are all very similar.
