RX7 SDX? GSL or GSL-SE
RX7 SDX? GSL or GSL-SE
Hi everyone,
I am really confused, i live in the netherlands and i recently got a first gen rx7. I don’t really have a lot of info on it. It says in the papers that it is an SDX but i have never heard of that model, maybe some of you can help? Do any of you know if it is the same as the gsl or gslse? I also would like to know my wheel pattern it is a 4 lug.
here are some specs:
-12a non turbo 116hp
-first registered in 1986?(i thought the fb only ran until 85?
-no sunroof
-power windows and mirrors
sorry if any of this has already been asked but i really can’t find information

The GSL and GSL-SE were North American trim levels only. Other countries had trim level designations such at the GT, GTX, and GT Limited. I'll doba little research and see what I can come up with on that particular trim level. Mazda may have called that trim level for your country the SDX. You may want to see about calling Mazda and providing the vin number to see if there's anything they can tell you. Their customer service is pretty decent.

The car appears to be all original. The SE suspension was standard on the late model European versions as was the S/GS fabric. The U.S. market was the only market to get the fuel injected 13B. Other markets received a 6 port 12A. It had a black air cleaner assembly instead of a blue assembly.

You'll probably get some good info if you head across to www.RX7fb.com - Index page as its a UK / European focused site.
Looks like you have the S3, which as was pointed out above only came with the 12a in the Europe, not the 13b. But you do have the GSL-SE brakes / suspension etc.

Ok, after some research, I learned that the left hand drive European versions had two trim levels. The DX and the SDX. Both have the SE suspension and wheels. The interior was standard across the board as was the new 16 gallon fuel tank for 84.The SDX adds headlight washers and a rear spoiler. Metallic paint was an option Looks like your rear spoiler is long gone, but it appears as though you have headlight washers. If those are original, you do in fact have an SDX trim level.
Dave, do you have any spec sheets for series 2s? I am very interested in what differences there are between a North American '81 and something from a European country. Interior trim, catalyst or non catalyst, disk or drum brake, that sort of thing.

I don't have a spec sheet unfortunately. But I do have quite a few books detailing the history of the RX-7 that I was able to find that information in. The European versions are not heavily mentioned as they are vastly different from the Japan and U.S. versions in terms of equipment and trim levels. They really mix the car up with options and equipment.
