Rotary shack 12A turbo motors...
Who here has a 12A turbo from Rotary shack? I want to go with a turbo motor, and I'm wondering if switching to the 12A motor is easier than going with a T2 motor. I'm assuming the 12A turbo is still carburated, but I really don't know anything about these engines.
Anyone got more detailed info about 12A turbos?

If it's a JSpec 12aT, it's fuel injected.
The motors themselves have lower compression rotors and a different port design IIRC. The turbo they come with is pretty small, but I like it because it's a very sleek system that doesn't even need an intercooler or anything.
Of course there's always room for expansion

Anybody know power figures on 'em? Of course, if it's fuel injected, I'd need an aftermarket ECU, etc, etc, so I would probably just be better off going 13B.

since i havnt had any 12a turbo's come in for the last 6 months , i would say your better off going with a 13b turbo....
the 12a turbo's are a blast though and they drop right in... add a nikki, os a sidedraft to the mix and they are good for 160rwhp @10 psi... the turbos are really small so they run out of air quick, but no lag at all , instant boost as soon as you touch the gas with the 12a turbo motors...

I have a bunch of questions for you regarding some of your products for sale... I emailed you a while back, but never got a response, and I just tried to send you a PM, but it says your PMs are turned off. What's a good way to reach you?

Well, i was told the 12a turbos came in the japan verison gsl-se's and that the U.S. gsl-se's stock ecu would control the 12at.
Anyone know this for sure?

With a 12A jspec Fi and turbo I get 220rwhp with stock port and stock turbo. To get this level of power you need a FMIC and efficient header/exhaust system with 12 lb boost. By retaining the 12AT dizzy you can use a fuel only ecu.

kc3414 , using an Australian chassis dyno the setup rated 153kw@ 6psi and later171kw@10psi. After rotor respringing, boost is now set at 12psi. To get this the fuel system was upgraded and anti pollution deleted.

why would you try to switch to the gsl-se ecu? if anything i would think about switching to a tii ecu of sorts and adding injectors. if you COULD get the -se one to work you would be very limited in boost, hell you would barely be able to run stock boost levels without upgrades and the trouble alone would not be worth it. get a megasquirt ecu... under 200 bucks. or, as i say... go carb. you can run the stock NIKKI carb from the n/a model on the 12aT intake manifold. same bolt pattern. tell me that's not the easiest solution.

I was talking about the gsl-se ecu since it is a FI ecu. Why would I need anything else if I am using the 12AT dizzy? The ECU would be for fuel only correct?
Then the gsl-se harness and ecu (which I have an extra ecu and harness for my 79sa) should be a very easy to swap into a fb and a cheap way to run the 12at.
Then run a inline FI fuel pump, FMIC and a manual boost controller (I would use a dual controller). I think this would be the most simple way, BUT tell me if I am wrong.

i couldn't tell you yes or no, but i do know that it will not be worth it. you want to put an n/a ecu on a turbo car. already sounds like a bad idea. it will be such a hassle. with all the splicing you would be doing you seriously might as well build a stand alone MS unit. so cheap and it wooorrrks. you are getting in to territory where noone will be able to help you if you have a problem. and you are going to boost and want power, but are going to have NO way of TUNING. engine go bye bye. i'm just hoping you look at other options if you are serious about this. give it a shot, you seem dead set in your ways on this one. just dont expect much help, because there's probably a good reason this isn't done.

Zac,
first of all I am not dead set but can you tell me what there is to control on a stock 12at motor other than fuel? Basically if I took one of my gsl's and mounted a turbo on it, did the exhaust work, made a carb hat for the carb, and put on a manual boost controller, why do I need a stand alone? I think your thinking way too much into high boost or mods. All I am talking about is a basic blow thru design running like 5-8psi.
Other than running a fmic I see no need for a computer other than to control fuel!
Ok, so basically tell me this, the stock 12at from mazda runs no IC and other than fuel what is controlled with a computer?
I not looking for much power or to beat my 91TII with a to4 with a 12at.
O'ya and the main reason I keep asking you is because it says you have a 12at in your sig.
Chad

zac,
I just checked out your 7 with the 12a and the s4 turbo (Nice setup buy the way).
Ok, again to get back on track I am asking these questions just for the stock 12at that came from the factory, like this

lol sorry if there is some confusion. thank you for the comment about my setup, it's running daaaaaaaamn good. (beat a high 12 second 240sx tonight). but anywho... ok....... YES the 12aT from japan ran on fuel injection with only 2 injectors. i think they were 800cc. had a weird distirbutor that would actually pull timing, but only up for like 6psi. after that it just stayed locked. that doesnt even matter tho. you want to control this stock throttle body fuel injection with a gsl-se n/a ecu. here's where the problem could occur. an ecu needs to be able to recognize boost. the gsl-se i think has an afm like the fc's. the 12at does not. there is the first issue you could run in to. so maybe, you could just run the afm... but you still have the boost issue. the computer needs to know that when positive pressure is thrown in... more fuel does too. i have seen people putting turbos on gsl-se's and running something low like 5psi. you can get away with that because honestly at 5psi if you are in the high 13's (afr's) it's not too severe. but you go past that and the ecu is still trying to put only enough fuel for an n/a setup then your gonna have big problems. detonation out the ***. last big problem i see is the fact that you can not tune this at all. people that turbocharge 6port n/a FC's using their stock n/a ecu can get around with no more than 7 or 8psi, and that's with using the safc and bigger secondary injectors and just dumping fuel. the gsl-se ecu will not accept an safc and you only have two injectors. so the main thing i am getting at is... this COULD work.. but it will seriously not be worth it. and when/ if you get it to work.. how good will it be and how safe will it be? i say if you wanna give it a shot. hit it up, because this is all just how i see it, i could eeeaasily be way off, but... man i just dont like the sound of it. now for "what i would do"
have robert @ rotary shack boost prep you a stock nikki carb, slap it on there with one of his hats and crank the fuggin boost up like me. you.... will...... LOVE IT! WOOOOOOOOOT! but seriously, i'll try to answer any other questions as best i can. hopefully some other guys maybe with this ecu experience can chime in. take care
