Rollcages ??

I'm wondering if anyone has any pics of rollcages installed in a 1st gen ?
I'm really wondering about the points to attach the cage to the chassis mainly. I'm not familiar with these cars whatsoever, so the chassis is a strange thing to me, much like the rotary when i first got it.

I'm not worried about interior or anything as all of that is being removed.

It is a good thing to ask questions on this. There are several sources for pre-fab roll cages, but in my experience they all are poor subsitutes for a custom cage.

Then again, it also depends upon your intended use for the car. If it is a full out race car, talk to a source that has experience with race car cages under the rules you are working with. If it is primarily a street car with occasional track use, then a pre fab cage might be OK. Autopower, Kirk, CP Racing, and Safety Devises all make (or made) cages for the first gen RX7.

Thanks !
The cage will all be custom. I just need something to go by really

I'm not setting the car up for any type of racing per say. It's just going to be a flyweight street car that I do not want to die in I'm mainly trying to add structural rigidity along with that bit of safety. I did look in race tech but didn't find much on the 1st gen, but maybe I should look things over again.

I got the car for free as a play thing, and I absoloutly love it. I'm an avid fan of excessive horsepower in light cars, so this thing is perfect for my project car

The CP cages are excellent quality, fit and finish, affordable too. A cage is actually going to be one of the first mods I put in whatever RX7 I get.

Full cage is not the way to go on a streetcar. A rollbar is a better and safer way to go. Unless you drive around strapped in with a 5 or 6pt harness and your helmet on.

oddly enough, most of the time spent in the car will be with a 6 point harness and a helmet....That is on the street too

All the links have helped greatly, I appreciate all the advice

Good point. I knew that, but it I am glad you brought it up again. If you're going to drive it on the street, Get a a roll bar or a 4 point.

I have a 6 point, with swing-outs. Basically, I have the side (door) bars removed since I put the cage on. simply because it would just be one more thing to get hurt with.

Now, at the track, with a 5 point harness, and a helmet, the 6 point will be in place.

I have an autopower bar installed in mine for now. It's not bad, but It's not the best either. It's good for protection, and mounting cameras and harnesses, but not that great for chassis re-enforcment. The plus side of it, I can still use my storage bins, but you need to remove the lid. I agree that anything more than a 4 pnt bar is dangerous on the street, unless it's fully padded and you have properly tightened harnesses on at all times.

I will be modifing the autopower unit down the road, but I think it's a great place to start. A lot of the older IT RX-7's I've seen saved a little money by starting with an autopower bar, then welding in their own cage down the road.

'85 GSL 302,

I'm going the same route as you have. The whole reason for the cage, etc is that once (if ever) the rotary gives up, I'm converting it over to SBC power. Like I said, i'm a fan of excess so i'm using the 2 garrett turbos i've got laying in inventory. Twin turbo SBC would sound sweet under the hood

Bad thing is, i'll prolly buy another 1st gen rx-7 from the junk yard and do a buildup on the rotary cause I freakin' love em now
