rock auto muffler

Anyone have any experience with either of the mufflers rock auto has available for an 83-85? They have both "bosal rear silencer" and "walker quiet flow". Just by looking at them I'm leaning a little more towards the walker cuz it's got the cool big chrome tip but when it comes down to it in looking more for quality.
Next question would be how loud would an OE style muffler be without a cat? My cat leaks and was just going to replace it with a resonator pipe if it won't be too loud. For that matter are there any good aftermarket direct fit mufflers for around that same price range that won't burn up and again won't be too damn loud without a cat?

Right now I'm working with a cheap glass pack with no glass left in it and an exhaust leak (i think from my cat) ago I'm guessing anything would be an improvement but again I'm looking for something that will last a little while and not be headache loud.
The ideal option would be something direct fit in the $150ish range that will have a decent not too loud sound. I'm guessing that without a cat something OE style would give me a decent sound?

The RB muffler will suit your requirements but runs about $300.00 new or you can find them
used for a lot less. The RB stuff used is still ok as its really built well. The walker and bosal parts
look like they will fit but its not clear they are made to the same standards as the RB ones. They
may not last but you get what you pay for, YMMV.

How loud they are I have no clue. I will say that even the RB one is loud without the
presilencers. So expect it to be loud but maybe not as bad as what you have.

I had a bosal muffler (slightly different - 82) on my car when I bought it and had to replace it - rusted out. I replaced it with a stock one I got from a guy's barn. I don't know how old it was though, I'd say it was at least 10 years old when I pulled it off.

Yea what I'm looking for is as quiet as i can get without having a cat. So I'm thinking a stock replacement is going to be my best bet, i don't want it to be stock quiet but enough to have my neighbors stop bitching when i come home at 1am

Get the cat replacement pipe from rx7.com. Worked great for me. As good as a header but quieter

I can't believe i didn't know about that site! But your talking about the "bonez main cat replacement pipe right? That looks like it may be a better option, i was just gonna have a shop weld me up a section of pipe but that looks like it has a sort of pre silencer in it. Are you running this setup?

I ran my FB with out a cat and the pre cat converter, substituted a cherry bomb glass pack. It was a little louder. The glass pack was falling apart after a year.

I don't doubt it, if i can get a setup that will last for a couple years and won't **** the neighbors off TOO much (a little is fine, i don't like them anyway) I'll be happy. Realistically if i can get a muffler for dirt that will work for 6 months or so I'll be good since i plan on getting the RB power pulse setup

The cat replacement pipe is very heavy duty!! Bolts in just fine and sounded great on my stock 83. Not much louder with the stock muffler and noticed a healthy difference too.

the Bosal muffler is an oem replacement type muffler. they are very good at noise cancellation and look and fit as an oem muffler should. they are a cheaper alternative to oem. i prefer them over any single tip muffler. Racing Beat is however the way to go when you want an excellent quality exhaust system.

Sorry for the slight thread jack, but does anyone have a picture of the stock muffler from an '83 and/or '84? Not sure if they're the same.

Thanks!

I think they are different because looking for mufflers there's options for 81-83 then 84-85 (correct me if I'm wrong) but either way i would like to see some pics of your guy's exhaust as well

That's not a stock muffler, is it? It looks aftermarket.

So, I am confused. Did the stock muffler have 1 or 2 openings on the back? I have an 83 and an 84 and one has duel tips, while the other has the single. From what I've been told both are stock...

From all the pictures I've looked at, I've gathered the Mazdaspeed, Mazdatrix (which may be the same as the MS ones) and RB are all duel tip. So, I'm guessing that if my car has a similar appearance it's probably one of these 3. However, I have no idea how to check and I kind of want to know. Thanks.

My stock muffler (bought from a guy's pile of parts in a barn), and the bosal replacement my car had when I bought it, were both dual tip, but mine's an 82. I believe that all stock mufflers were dual tip, but I can't say I'm sure.

Not sure if this is really conclusive, but it appears that these are all dual exhaust.

Hmm, okay. So, there is no real definitive way to identify a catback except for it's looks?

the oem muffler for the S3 is a single pipe in with a dual tip out. it has a welded on heat shield and has a set of replaceble tips, called a diffuser system. the chrome tips screw into and cover the diffuser set which is bolted into the muffler with four 10mm bolts. the GSL-SE muffler's diffuser is integrated

So if I by an aftermarket oem style muffler it won't have the tips?
Like I said earlier I'm looking at either of the 2 options rock auto has or if anyone knows of a better option in the 120-150 range

And happy Halloween to everyone!
