replacement FB power steering pump ('84 GSL-SE

Hey y'all -

I am in the need of a replacement power steering pump for my 1984 SE (yes, I am still driving the Brown Mound 18 years later). My factory pump burned up a while ago.

I see the auto part sites and Rock Auto list a replacement made by Cardone part number 215684. Has anyone every replaced their power steering pump with this replacement, and is it a pretty straight forward repair job?

Right on.

Mike

I have a motor that has one on it still mounted. Engine was pulled for a v8. It's been in my garage a long time. I think it's a 84 engine. Well at least the rats nest had the extra valves and such. Wanna take a chance? Make me an offer.

Supposedly the Rock Auto replacement would be a direct bolt-in but I can't speak from experience. You could always try it out and see how it goes!

What do you mean by 'burned up'? Mine just got to the point where it leaked out all the fluid from the front of the pump right behind the pulley each time I'd fill it.

Turns out its due to an internal design tolerance that allows a 'C' clip to wear through an internal bushing which then lets the main shaft ride out the front farther than it should, releasing the internal pressure from the front oil seal. It still works, but was reman back in about 1990 or so.

There's another thread on here about this, so take a look there too,

I have the same car, and the same problem. I tried to order off RockAuto, and when I got to the shipping page it just says that the part number doesn't exist.
No clue as to why, but if you manage to find one that works, can you please let me know?
Cheers

Have you read David Lane's site on replacement of 84/85 PS pumps with later generation pumps which have a better repair history (and availability)?

Check it out: http://www.nellump.net/peri/power-st...p-upgrade.html

May be an option for those of us sticking with PS, but it's not straightforward as I had hoped.

That link at the bottom doesn't work, anybody have any idea how to get ahold of a guy who wrote the closest thing to finding a PS pump for our cars 14 years ago :|
