Remove rear sway bar for auto X??

We have a little project Rx-7 that we use for street/ SOLO I (track days). We went to a re-inaguration of an old track that we use to race a we love it. Here is a video of the track . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1wHOEYgPpY

Our suspension setup is:
Tokico shocks all around
RB Springs
RB sway bars
Re-speed strut bar

The suspension isn't a racing suspension because we use the car sometimes around. So, it have to be driveable.

In the past we had a problem with the inside tire/wheels getting in the air a few inches (like the GTI) but since the rx-7 is rear wheels drive is cause us a big headache.

After searching a lot this forums we decided to remove the rear sway bar. The car improves a lot. I ran only four heats, but one with heavy rain. The car was 4 second faster than before. And the track was lightly wet. I felt I could easily cut off another 3 seconds if the day was dry. The car still felt a little loose on the back. The front is very solid and I can enter hard int he turn, but in the exit I have to wait until the car is straight to hit the gas or I will loose it. But it was way more better without the rear sway bar.

Any sugestion of why can I do to the rear to have it less loose on the back?

BTW is was the most fun day in my life

Your passenger needs to keep his hand inside the car, or he's going to get both of you in trouble. At least around here he would.

Have you played with tire pressures at all?

theres a couple of ways you can go with the car.
you can put very stiff springs (450lb. front 350lb. rear)on the car, add a large front bar, and remove the rear bar. but that will give you a very hard ride all the time and you will also need to upgrade your shocks at the same time because it will wear out a stock shock quickly.

or you can put on a more compliant set up with adjustable shocks less stiffly sprung setup about 400-450 lb front and 250 lb rear again with the large front bar and leave the rear bar in place and let the sway bar control theroll on the car and not just the springs.
good luck have fun!!!

I have the racing beat front sway bar that is 1.125" or 28.5MM that it's a lot and the same of re-speed. You're taking about (450lb. front 350lb. rear). I ride with the RB that it's front - 145 lb/in and rear – 112 lb/in. And the ride it's hard on the street, not impossible but hard to imagine twice lbs on the springs.

Kentetsu what are your springs? from re-speed?

Another thing is I was using victoracer tires. And it was only 5 laps per heat. At one minute the lap it was only 5 min on the tire to get warmer. Also the fron tires was on better shape that the rears. I'm considering change to toyo ra-1 or r888 or similar because like kentetsu I like to get the track on my tires and right now with the victoracer it's a little difficult

With basically stock springs, shocks/struts and sway bars, it's okay to remove the rear sway bar. Once one starts beefing them up to race trim, imho, one needs an adjustable rear sway bar. I have Suspension Techniques sway bars and the rear is adjustable. By then it's also time to increase tire footprint/adhesion and relearn how to drive the car.

I did most all my suspension mods before I increased tire size. Once I went with the larger tires it was an entirely different beast to drive. Just a guess on my part but I'd say the car went from the stock 0.79g skidpad to probably somewhere near 1.2g. That's a huge difference.

Yes, my springs (and everything else aside from the rear swaybar) is from Respeed. The rates I run are 275 front/150 rear. The ride is "politely firm". Definitely still suitable for daily driving. The swaybars are the key to the whole equation though. The front bar from Respeed is a monster, and extremely light weight, since it is a hollow bar.

I started out on Racing Beat suspension parts (springs, swaybars). After a season or two of autocross I felt that I had outgrown those items, and wanted the adjustability of coilovers too.

I started talking with Billy from Respeed, and he asked what I wanted from the car. I told him I wanted to be able to beat the Miatas, but still be able to drive the car to work everyday (40 miles). That is exactly what I ended up with.

Last Spring, I even took my wife with me from Michigan to North Carolina for an RX7 meet. I can't say that the ride was "cadillac smooth", but it was more than endurable for the 12 hour drive.

I love seeing these cars get out on the course, so if there's anything I can do to help just let me know.
