Reinstalling AC
My 79 had AC removed by PO. I’m planning on reinstalling it at some point. It has the standard 2 groove pulley. Do I need the air pump (also removed) as well to even the torque on the belts?
Any tips appreciated!

Are you running dual belts on alternator/water pump now? If you’re not running an air pump you should be.
There’s not enough area of belt riding on water pump pulley and it will slip under load of alternator.+fan clutch.
Tightening belt enough to stop slippage for a period of time, til belt loosens again from rubber worn off prematurely,is detrimental to life of eccentric shaft bearings.
Dusl belts can be run @1/2 the tension of single belt.
Running ac without air pump/belt in place is a non issue. It’s the single alternator/water pump belt that needs some help.

Got it, no sir, just one belt to the alternator for now.

Look at The Banzai dual sheave alternator pulley kit. It comes with a pair of belts. The 2nd belt runs in the groove originally occupied by air pump belt. There's a pretty slick alternator adjusting bracket offered by them too. Believe a vendor on this site.

Banzai is a endor here and he does have excellent products. The alternator adjustment bracket is well worth a look.

Awesome thanks guys. Funny.. I have that alternator belt squeak on my 89 vert. It has stock everything too. Tried new belts, might need to get dual pulley for it as well.

The A/C compressor is run off of an extension pulley that's bolted to the main eccentric shaft pulley that would drive the alternator, water pump, and air pump. The extension pulley drives the A/C and power steering if equipped in 84 and 85 on the GSL and GSL-SE.
