Redline

In my 81 they rpms on the gauge go to 8,000 and the little red part starts at 7,000, was wondering what the actual redline is for these cares because i always hear of how they can be pushed so hard.

Redline is at 7000 rpm, where the red starts. Yes, these engines can be pushed to a max of 8400 rpm without damage, but the engine doesn't make any power at that rpm, so its more productive to just shift at 7000 rpm.

I took my car to a track for the first time last week, that buzzer got pretty damn annoying, how do you turn it off?

I know everyone says to take the 7 up to the redline every now and then, but I just can't bring myself to run it that hard when I don't need too.

With the roads around here I never have a chance to redline it in anything except 1st or 2nd and I just really don't like doing that..
Is carbon build up really a big problem on a 84 SE that I need to redline it that often?

BTW mines hasn't been redlined in 2 months...How often should I do it?

OMFG you have got to be kidding me 2 months. you will have a crap load of carbon Guaranteed. As somebody once said "A redline a day keeps the Carbon away". believe me it is better to redline it that is what these engines are made for i do it every time i go driving which is at least twice a day.

I actually went up to 6000 or so, that high enough or should I take it all the way to 7200-7200?

I dont see how you dont have an urge to redline it atleast once a week. It is good to give it a good rev every once in a while so dont worry about running it to hard, youll actually be doing more good than harm depending on how many miles are on your engine.

I rarely get up to redline.

What counts is HOW you drive not HOW FAST you drive it.

But for what it's worth, for a stock engine it's not a good idea to hold the revs over 6200 for extended periods, and never exceed 8500 on pain of death (not yours, your engine's).

The stock tach stops at about 8100-8200 indicated (see avatar at left), but it's most likely inaccurate and it does lag behind the engine speed when you accelerate/decelerate. But with a stock engine it doesn't make anything but noise at that engine speed so there's no point to kissing the end of the tach anyway.

I read that "a redline a day keeps the carbon away" for the first time about a month after I got my '85. On the way home that morning (around 3am) I decided to go for it. From a stop, I redlined it in 1st, then 2nd. When I looked in my rearview mirror I thought I had blown my motor for sure! There was a HUGE cloud of smoke!

I turned around and drove back through it so I could smell it, but it didn't smell like oil at all (maybe just a little rich in fuel). I immediately repeated the process, and this time there was not a trace of any type of smoke. AWESOME! I could tell the difference in idle and power right away. You've got to love the rotary!

BTW, the guy I bought the car from was a retired travelling salesman, so I doubt he did much high revving.

High speed doesn't rid carbon, high load does. The heat and pressure knocks the loose stuff off.

Now chew on this... stockly speaking, the engine will run way rich at the top end because the carb is so small. Running rich = carbon formation. Hmmm....

I don't like to redline ever day as others seem to think. Normal driving for me is shifting at 5k RPMs and crusing at 3k. If I feel like flying, I'll shoot it to close to 7000, but never hold there.

Heh, if I didn't regularly shift until 5k in town I would definitely get pulled over for a sound ordinance violation. I get cops eyeing me at 3k, but then again I'm an insane looking kid in a bitchen, loud, 1st generation, RX-7. What cop wouldn't have ***** envy?

I have never reved the engine over 5500 rpm in my 83 gsl for one thing I get a terrible squeal which sounds alot like belts, I know that anti freeze hasn't contacted them. the belts are tight but they are the toothed type not the smooth type that were originally on them and I never had the problem before. The belts only have about 6000 miles on them and have done it since new. Are there good belts available out there? these were from autozone.

If you hear a constant whooshing from the engine bay that changes with RPM, then the problem is most likely the fan clutch fails to disengage. This is fairly common.

The clutch fan even when in proper operating condition stresses the alternator and air pump belts... the stock belt arrangement isn't that great.

Rather than spend the money for a new fan clutch, convert to electric fan. Eliminates one factory fault with the car.

mine made the high rpm squeal, your belts are too tight. If the alternator gets slightly off line with the other 2 pulleys and the belt is too tight, it squeals whenever you rev it high. Back off the tension and enjoy. I do, all the time, every day.

when im cruzin i just shift at 3500 or so not too high maybe even at 3000, its a waste of gas to go higher than what you need to go, unless u wanna show off then i understand...on a good 12.5 gals of gas 180 miles on that tank is awsome, but i usaully get 160 or so, gas is a bitch up here in hawaii. low grade is $2.25 5 months ago it was $2.07. crazy...

With only 100hp, I don't see how you could NOT redline it.

When I'm racing mine (rallycross), I just shift when the rate of acceleration goes down, probably in the high 6000s or low 7000s (my tach is no longer installed).

I run right up to redline quite a bit w/ my car. If I'm feeling real sporty I'll go right past the buzzer, but I usually try to shift right at 7,000rpm.

It's a blast, and my car has thanked me by running perfect for 11 years...

My S5 vert, on the other hand, hardly ever goes over 5,000rpms. I have to force myself to redline it once in a while just 'cause I know it's good for it...

stock 85 feelin a little sluggish

I have the same model with the 12A engine, its feelin a little slow. I bought it a few weeks ago with only 93K original miles. You really think a little redline action will give it some go? I wouldn't mind some advice on what to do to get a little more torque and speed from it.
