Rebuilding Power Steering Pump

Hi all,

My power steering pump started to go out a year or two ago, puking fluid out the top. I pulled the belt and drove it that way for a while, but I'd like to get it going again. Remanufactured pumps are expensive. But rebuild kits seem to be cheap. Anyone done a rebuild? Is there a write up somewhere? I've never done one so I'm not sure what's involved.

Thanks,

I'd like to know too. Mine puked out the top for awhile so I just ran it dry. Then one day the pulley snapped off. I just cut the belt and kept goin. But I'd like to fix it all back up now.

Thanks,
I've rebuilt several and there is nothing to it. A few O rings and a seal.
First loosen the 17mm nut on the front of the shaft and then loosen the 3 8mm(? going from memory...)on the pulley. Then release the belt tension and remove the belt.

remove pulley exposing 3 14,, bolts that hold the pump to the bracket.

before you do that loosen the connection of the oil lines. Once they have drained a bit you can remove them out of the way, leaving them hooked up to the steering box. Now remove the 3 14mm bolts and the pump unit slides out the backside of the AC/PS mounting bracket.
Once out, drain the rest of your fluid out and then get to work.
If you are not familiar with the pump, maybe snap a few pics of what it looks like assembled before you tear down.
Remove the 4 12mm bolts that hold the pump together and you will see its basically a sandwich affair with some seals inbetween the slices. and o rings connecting the reservoir to the pump itself.
When assembling the new o rings, use a little Vaseline when slipping them on and in the connection process to keep them from tearing. same with the front seal, lube the outer rim and inside seal edges when you assemble.
Once you get it out, you will see how simple it is. I think the Mazda rebuild kit even gives you and exploded diagram but its really not needed.
After you get it back in the car and all hooked up, start the car and turn your wheels all the way from one side to the other to bleed the system. keep an eye on the fluid level and refill as required.
