Rebuilding a 12A, what parts to buy?
Hi Guys.
I'm trying to put together a 12A that I bought in boxes. This is my first Rotary build ever, so consider me really green Since I am located in Europe (Denmark) and have a good connection to Japan I figured I would buy from there to save Taxes and shipment from US.
I figured I needed a lot of gasket, bearing, O-rings etc. I found alot of parts online, but I can't find any Apex Seal kits ? They seems to be discontinued, is that true? Do I then need to get the rotors drilled for 3mm Apex seals ? And what Apex seal to buy then? There is alot of types out there.
Could I ask you guys to look through this shopping list and give a comment on the parts ? Is there anything missing for a complete engine rebuild ?
Oh and maybe this also counts in on Apex seal type:
I'll keep the engine mostly stock but modified Nikki, RB exhaust and some kind of porting, haven't decided on Bridge or not.

If you can't find what you're looking for from your source in Japan .. then Atkins Rotary still lists 79-85 3mm Apex Seal & Spring Set for your 12A engine for $250.00
(ARE135)
Goopy Performance also lists 3mm Apex Seals for your 12A engine in either stock thickness or oversized.
You will still have to pay for shipping .. however I don't think you pay sales tax for out of state purchases.

Is better to open engine then see what u need . I was gonna spent $1400 on a whole rebuild kit. I opened it up cleaned everything and just needed a seal kit coolant seals oil seals etc. got it for $300. Engine had great compression just was smoking.

Apex seals for a 12A are N201-11-300B, the spring is 1011-11-304B, there is no kit, you need qty of 6
i also would tear the engine apart before ordering parts

Can you post some pics of the hardware so we can see what kind of general condition everything is in?
You might find that your rotor housings have chrome flaking which can be a problem.
Since 12A rotor housings and some other parts are very hard to find now, you might be better served to buy parts to build a 13B while using some of your 12A components, ie the Irons.
Also, have you tried Mazda dealerships? Over here in North America, our dealers can get you pretty much any part you ask for (assuming it is still available).

Thanks for replying guys! Here are some pictures. The engine was complete disassembled when I bought the car. I know… Big project, but that’s how I like it. So, I’m gonna find some tools for measuring everything out and check. E-shaft should be easy, bearings I recon to change anyway, rotors is a bit challenging, I fear the apex seal groves are worn, but I guess I need new apex seals to measure them ? Or ?
Rotor bearing seems to have a grove right where the bearing is assembled, is that normal ?
Rotors looks in good shape, it I fear the apex grove is worn, can I measure these without new apex seals to see if they are worn out ?
Oil seal springs looks okay, but how to check ?
the peeling of chrome was happened on the ones on the motor when disassembled, but I got two perfect fine housing. So that’s should be in place.
End bearings have the same grove and also some wear, haven’t measured them yet, but figured they should be replaced.
Really small exhaust ports though. If I’m doing a bridge porting Intake, what to do with exhaust then ?
Apex seal grove wear or apex seal wear ?
Second housing, can still see the honing marks.

The Mazda dealers in Denmark cannot help at all. Nothing at all.. Brake shoes, key slots, suspension parts. nothing at all. Only comment from them was that I had a really OLD car....
