Exclamation Really Bad Sputter since cleaned engine

my84 FB has a 80 SA motor that ever since I took to the car wash last week spudders like hell!!

I had a little anti-freeze seap onto the top of my intake mani(RB) so after i installed freezplugs i figured i would wash it off while i was at the car wash.

Well ever since I pulled out of the parking lot the car spudders like crazy!!!!!!

It will idle and rev perfectly fine, but once you move it starts automaticly.

Now if you stand on the gas it cuts out and runs normal(fast). But if you dont, you can barely keep it from stalling.

Iswitched the plug wires and got nothing...

mabie gooped-up-carb, put carb cleaner in it, still no better!!!

Thought it was timing, nope.

NEED HELP ASAP!!!

I'm pulling my freakin hair out here!!

WHAT DO I DO??

see if you have water under your dizzy cap. spray some wd-40 in it if you see any sign of water, then blow it out. seems like an electrical problem so run through you ignition system with a fine tooth comb and see if you have any water in any of your connections. good luck.

Yeah, you got something in the ignition system wet...

It's probably time for you to replace the distributor cap/rotor anyway, so spend the 15 bucks for that and you'll most likely be all set. If not, then what I would do is just let the car idle for a while to warm things up and evaporate the little bit of moisture that is on that one vital connection that is causing the issue.

Good luck...

I figured it would be electrical....

I checked the cap/rotar/coil/mires/plugs and the top of the dizzy and removed any moisture.

So are there any other possibilities???

Trailing or leading? On your year vehicle if the trailing side is out then the fuel pump will not work. Was it the coil closest to the battery?

The trailing.

The fuel pump still worked though-mabie b/c I have a by-passed relay.

The secondary coil has gone out b4, b/c my tach went out.

This is the secondary ignitor, which I replaced b4, but I didnt come with the silicone, so I thought I didn't need it and now its toast.

Hopefully the problem will be solved when the new one gets here(with silicone).

I'm 99% sure it will be.

Pick up a tube of thermo paste at the local Radio Shack. Silicone is not used in this application. :-)

I had problems lately with water collecting in the little black rubber boots that fit over the ignitors that was caused by very small holes where they fit around the harness lead.

Every time I'd drive in wet weather or spray down the engine, it would start sputtering and I'd find water collecting on top of the ignitor.

Once I realized what it was I took the boots off and now no more problems in the rain, although I would prefer they were protected.

Ray

PS hope you are not buying a new ignitor from autozone, used ones are readily available for much much less (like about $20).
