Rat Nest Removal Problems

So I'm in the middle of removing my rat nest, all going good, until something breaks while removing a hose. The piece is the solenoid (look at picture). According to the tutorial I'm using (http://maz_tutorials.ten15.net/Tutorial_1.pdf) it needs to go back in. Do I need to replace the solenoid, or is there something I can do instead? Do I even need the solenoid? Thanks in advance.

I have 2 vacuum lines in my rats nest. one for the dizzy and one for gas tank vent... thats all. I have no solenoids, no A/C, cruise, or the likes...

its not a solonoid, just a vent/check valve. it more or less just acts as a union for the crankcase and fuel tank vents. i left both mine open and the only issue ive had yet is a little oil residue build up near the vent on the oil fill tube, which is nothing that a quick shot w/ brake clean can't clean up.

Thanks guys! I'm going to go through pics of other people's setups to make sure I get everything sorted out.

Yeh don't worry about the crank case gasses, they will either accumulate in your engine (called lung mustard by some) or vent into the atmosphere and contribute to global warming.

Thats the purge valve.

Check out my setup, it may help.

I just ran a line directly from the vent on the oil filler neck, to a vaccuum source. Other have done this as well, and it works awesome.

Here is the purge valve hooked up according to Carl's rat nest removal tutorial that you are using:

One suggestion about that tutorial, if you attach your vacuum advance to the first nipple on the base plate instead of the second one (as the tutorial says to do) it will work much better.

Does anyone have a picture of what they did with the vacuum ports under the carb where the rat nest tubes use to hook up to? More importantly the 3rd and 4th ones? The tutorial shows this going into this piece (that I broke). Should I cap them off or connect them with a hose. Or does it matter?

I'd reinstall your purge valve, as in this picture:

The left tube goes to #4 port, the right one to #3. I recycled tubes from my rats nest removal that already had that little 90 degree bend in them so they fit real nice. I think they were from the cruise control or something like that.

The larger tube that is Tee'd into the purge valves runs up to a nipple at the top of the carb, sending your crankcase emissions out of your crankcase and back into the combustion chamber, where they are detoxified by combustion in the engine.

If you need another purge valve, I have one I can send you, my contribution to keeping your crankcase emissions out of our environment and reducing the rate of global warming.

Do you think I'll have a problem if I just run a hose from the crankcase to the oil filler neck, and not use a T? I'll just be bypassing this piece all together, but will I have any issues by doing this?

By the way: This is just a track car, never driven on the street, so I'll only be contributing to global warming once a month .

I've done it along with others, and it probably works better than the stock setup.

Good question, I have no idea how that purge valve works and would like to know. But the reason I kept it was that it looks like it is a bit more involved than a direct vacuum link, somehow relating the engine vacuum to the purge valve function. Also, Carl said so.

For high mileage commuter cars like my GSL, where every bit of gas mileage is a plus and we are making significant contributions to global warming, it might be important, but for a track car it probably doesn't matter.

So can anyone tell us how a purge valve works and why bother?
