questions about cap and rotor

hello all,
I have a 72 RX2 with the Twin dizzy 12a, and i had some questions about the distributers, and coils. the car is all stock right now, and i jsut got a pair of msd blaster2 coils for it, will i need anything else to be able to use them or is it a simple install and then i am done. will i need to retime my car for any reason?

What is this Direct fire system i have heard about?

is there a way to use 2nd gen coils with the 12a?

thanks for your help. matt22

i think that the direct fire shows no power improvements (from what i have seen) and im not sure how different the 72 12a is from mine but most anything can be retrofitted.

You can't use the Blaster coils with your ignition because it's points based. A points based ignition runs at 9 volts, whereas a transistorized ignition runs at the full 12 volts. If you want to use the 12 v coils, you're going to need two MSD boxes, one for each dizzy.

I wouldn't bother upgrading trailing, but I would upgrade leading. Let the stock leading points trigger the MSD (on the white wire). Then connect the MSD to a 2nd gen leading coil. Then connect the 2nd gen leading coil to both leading spark plugs. Replace your stock leading plugs with 2nd gen BUR7EQ. You most likely will notice a power improvement.

hey jeff
I installed the FC leading coil in my MSD-6A last night. I compared it with my old direct-fire set up (dual MSD coils). I like the dual coils much better as the flash is much more consistent; meaning, I could barely tell that its flashing at all. Unlike the FC leading coil, you can see the flash going on and off. plus, i didnt like the way my engine idled. I couldnt take it for a drive since it was late and I had a few beers. OR maybe I was just drunk!!

PS. sorry for jacking ur thread

That's cool. The more people that test it, the more we'll know. When I bench tested my MSD 6AL and FC leading coil, it sparked very well on both plugs. Infact, I was actually surprised that it sparked through the plug that I had increased the resistance on, and also continued to spark happily on the other plug as if nothing was wrong. Maybe your coil is a little tired?

I wonder where that Vegeta guy is? He had excellent results with an MSD brand DIS coil after upgrading from dual coils (I can't recall if they were MSD brand or not).

I have a bridgeported 13b, im running msd blaster coils, and 2 msd 6al boxes. I tried the one box thing and it doesn t work, the trailing is very important on rotarys even though many people have a misconception that they dont do much.
If you use 2 boxes it works way better than just 1 box,and dont forget about the trailing!!

Dyno testing has shown that trailing is good for about 1HP.
