Alright the rear supports in my car have rusted through the body, so now when I hit a bump or hit gas really hard. The whole rear end tweaks and the drive shaft hits the bottom of the car. There were threee visibal grooves, but oh well. I think im going to drive till the drive shaft falls off or something.

But I will hopefully be getting another rex by Spring!

I found 2 other 1st gens, that should be here around 3pm....just to check out eachother's cars. Small gettogether, if your car is still reasonably functional.

 

Wow... and that pic is only 2 days old? Where'd all the rust come from, the body looks pretty damn nice! Remeber, with a welder and some steel, just about anything can be fixed.

 

Thr rust didnt really show up in the picture, but the whole underneath of the car is rusted. But thats what you get for 800 doallars!

I think im going to just drive it into the ground till spring!

I fixed mine, and it didn't look like half the car your does... that'd be a shame to let die... My '79 did the same thing, driveshaft would hit the floor when I shifted, hit bumps, etc.... you know what I did? Cut out the rusted metal, bent two pieces of 16GA steel plate into |_| shapes, with one side following the roundish cut I made in the side of the wheel well area, and the other side the same angle as the frame.. then I cut the old little boxes off the old pieces of metal that hold the trailing arm to the body of the car, plug welded them onto the bottoms of the pieces of 16GA steel, and then welded all the seams.... a little bit of fiberglassing later and it looks factory, and is probably 10x stronger and rust proof!

Or if you don't, live with your decision to put such a beautiful car to rest for such a small matter...

 

When I say rusted, I mean I can pick away the whole wheel well. Ill try to get some pics soon to show you.

 

Maybe tomorrow I'll take a couple pics to show you what I did, and to what extent the wheel wells were rusted on my '79.... I'm sure there's some surface rust on there now, as I never got around to finishing it... the brackets are welded in, but not painted...

 

To make sure that we are talking about the same thisng, the pieces are kinda rectangular

 

yup, on the forward edge of the wheel well, two rectangular pieces, a bolt through each, and a bar going from each one to the driveshaft.

trust me, it's fixable... as long as there's SOME metal left in the wheel well (which there pretty much has to be), it's fixable.... I don't understand why most people on this forum won't even consider fixing this (In my opinion) minor incovenience...

I guess having access to a torch/plasma cutter, welder, and metal has a big part in it... but around here you can rent a welder for $120 canadian per week, or $40 a day... worth it in my opnion...

If you haven't done any welding before, rent it for a week and practice on some old pieces of metal before you tackle the finish job.

I'll make up a diagram showing what I did perhaps... or I'll just wait until daylight tomorrow and get a picture of it...

Hey.. all those years of winter driving finally took its toll on your 7?? Damn.. that really sucks. I put my 7 in the garage this winter to make sure it doesn't get any more rust on it. If you want help fixing it (if you decide to keep it), let me know! I recently repaired some rust on my car, and it doesn't look too bad.
