what is this thing and whats keeping me from yanking it right now? Its got a linkage that used to run to the carb but theres no spot for it on my new Sterling.

Please tell me I get to pull it, theres nothing I love better. I just pulled my now useless cruis control actuator thing.

 

Unless I'm mistaken, that is your cruise control. Maybe you pulled your hot assist earlier and thought that was the CC?

 

Cruise control module. Yank it and throw it away.

 

you're probably right. I just assumed what I pulled was the cruise control. Thanks again man, you're coming in handy today.

 

You can also take the bracket on the rear of the driver's side strut housing off, it's also CC controls.

 

Ok NOW I'm confused. Thats what I pulled the first time thinking it was the cruise control. So wheres the hot start assist? Is it possible that I dont have one? Cause the only linkages running to my carb are those two, the choke, and the throttle.

 

Just follow the cable from the unit pictured above, and remove all of it. I'm pretty sure that what you originally pulled was the HSA.

 

Hot start assist is below the CC you displayed in the first post, mind you not every car has this, my 83 did not but my 84 and 85 both do have it. Not sure if it was regional or year based....all three came equipped with CC.

Of course I could be wrong here.....anyone?

 

No, there used to be a Sub-Zero start assist below that big cruise control module from the first picture, but I pulled that a while ago. I know thats not the hot start. Mines an 83 though so maybe its different.

The thing I first pulled was on the back of the driver's side shock tower. It was a little electric motor that pulled a cable that was hooked to the carb. I can get pictures if I need to.

 

I guess I just assumed, oops, anyway that thing in your first pic....rip it out....it's CC.

 

I think they're confused.

COLD start assist is under the cruise control (it's a bottle that contains 90% antifreeze 10% water).

HOT start assist is on the rear of the driver's strut tower and has a cable going to the carb linkage

and that big honkin' round black thing is most definitely cruise control.

On the stock carb there are 4 wires

1. Throttle
2. Hot Start Assist (on driver's strut tower, cracks the throttle only when the engine is hot)
3. Cruise (wire comes from big black thing)
4. Choke

When all's said and done, you have throttle and choke.

thanks for clearing that up. Thats pretty much what I got out of that mess of confusion but its good to have it confirmed. And so now you're saying I dont need the hot start assist right? My carb doesnt have a place to connect it (as far as I can tell) and so I just want to make sure this won't be a problem.

That's your flux capacitor. You definitely need it.

No you don't need the hot start. You just have to remember that you need to crack the throttle a small bit when cranking when warm. That's all the hot start assist ever did. When it "detected" that your engine was warm and you were cranking, it pulled the linkage back half an inch. Equivalent to lightly putting your foot on the pedal to open the throttle plates.

I've had no problem whatsoever with my Sterling and getting it to start in the smack middle of summer after the car had been running for 3 hrs and sitting only long enough for a fuel-up

Just what I needed to hear, thanks. Now I just have to figure out this return-fitting problem with my carb (came with no return, probably because I asked to have it boost prepped. Unfortunately I'm not yet boosted and dont have a return-style regulator)
