problems wiring 12A, 84GSL

k, so after a 3 year build, nothing too crazy...just never got around to it mostly. We have started putting the fresh 12a into the car.

after looking at a picture on here posted in another thread, I used it to wire up the starter/solenoid.

The power wire is on the right-hand side of the solenoid.

The link to the hot start is on the left

And the battery ground is to the engine where it meets the tranny.

After hooking the battery up, the starter starts spinning un-engaged, without trying to start, just when you attach the negative cable.

looked at diagrams, can't find whats wrong.

thanks dudes.

Two bolts on the starter solenoid. One has an uninsulated, woven copper wire attached to it. 12v from battery attaches to the other bolt. Sounds like you have it backwards.

went out and double checked everything, and the wiring is all right.

the power wire is on the right terminal, the wire going to the hot start relay is right, of course the ground it right, and the b/y wire coming from the ign switch is plugged in.

+ battery cable goes to the outside, (LH) lug of the starter motor. - battery cable goes to the upper starter bolt on the engine side. The ignition wire clips to the spade terminal on the starter. If all that's correct, take the starter and have it tested. Sounds like the Bendix is going out on the starter. All wire connections must clean and grease free and the battery needs a full charge.

kk update.

after taking a second look at the car, noticed that the solenoid in the picture on here is different than ours. havent flipped the wires yet since its not my car and my buddy and I havent worked on it today, but that should take care of it.

-1 for oil everywhere hiding copper woven wire.

ok, after wires were flipped to the right position, and now there is no power inside the car, no door chime, no lights when key is turned.

is the loss of power a symptom of one of the 2 fusible links in the steering column being faulty?

cause before when the starter was wired wrong, we had power inside like the chime and ect.

Check the main fusible link in the brown box, under the hood, on the inside of the left wheel well. Just toward the rear of the car from the battery. Also check that it's terminals are clean. Did you really "flip wires" or did you just move the main 12v wire to the left solenoid terminal?

I moved the B+ to the left solenoid terminal, and the fusible link for the hot start relay to the right terminal.

and of course the b/y wire for the ign switch is plugged in as well.

It's my buddy's car, and he told me that the inside had no power over the phone, haven't been there yet to run thru stuff.

just wondered before I took to checking the fusible links in the steering column

That should be right. Check the links under the hood if there is no power when you turn on the ignition switch.
