Power antenna
Hey guys, i read all the threads about power antennas. None of them seem to apply to me. When I turn on the radio the mast will raise all the way up but when I turn it off it somehow doesn't seem to catch and just stays up. It will however go down if you have two people and one presses the off switch (radio power) and the other one "helps" the antenna down. What's wrong? Thanks guys.

There is a wip inside the antens that pushes the antena up, and also puls it down. I belave the wip is attached at to the antena mast. If the wip breaks off the mast it can't pull it down, but can push it up. So it would seem that your helper is actually pushing the antena down like on a radio, but your power antena is pushing it up.
I replaced mine in my '84 with a #70.00 cnd after market antena from Canadian Tire (try radio shack in the US) Works great, but was a bit tricky to re wire bc the stock antena is wired to a realy and operates in an unconventional maner. I also wired this to an after market CD player.
Sory I can't find the link on how to re wire the after market antena. I will see if I can find it and post it then
Good luck

Radio Shack, $20. Pretty easy to install, hope they have some left.

Only way to bring it down is turn the radio "off".
Another great reason to switch to an aftermarket antenna, it will also go down when the car is shut off.

Other aftermarket options?
I've tried Radio Shack U.S. and Canada, and they are definitely out of the 12-1330/120-1330 power antenna.
Anyone have another recommendation for an aftermarket swap? Mazdatrix and the Mazda dealer are out of the question, @ ~$200. I've seen Best Buy mentioned in another thread ("Antenna Crap"), so I'll check there tomorrow. Crutchfield carries "universal" motorized antennas, but I'll be damned if I'm going to pay $60-80 for something that will probably universally suck. I don't need an antenna to go up and down that much.

OK guys, I'm going to tell you all my deepest darkest secret. You can find the radio shack antenna (cat no 12-1330) on ebay, I just put my order in for one at $14.50 plus $10 shipping, about what it used to cost from radio shack. I found two vendors, one in Florida and one in California, the CA guy says he has more than a hundred units.

I think that it's a pretty standard unit with a slightly warped sheet metal mount. The bubble pack Universal Antenna at Kragens ($55) looks identical (except for the rotation of the lower mounting points). The $65 version at Kragens includes some custom fittings.
Armed with the Kragen unit, the bracket from the old antenna (or some plumbers strap!) and the rewiring instructions, it should be a simple matter. I'll find out in the next couple weeks: I have 3 to replace.

Search string
Actually, once i searched for "radio shack power antenna" in "titles and descriptions", the California vendor came up third in the results.
I've emailed the vendor to make sure that the antenna is actually the 12-1330 part. Have you asked him this yourself already?

Yes I did this for one of his ebay adds that I randomly picked from the several he's listed for lot's of different cars. The antenna is "universal" so it can be advertised for lots of different cars, a neat ebay trick. He assures me the one I asked about are radio shack cat no 12-1330. I ordered two and got $5 off on the shipping ($45 total). To be absolutely sure ask him to confirm the cat number on the one you are bidding on.
