You'll need an intake template and an exhaust template if your doing both.

As with what Rx7Carl said, if you plan on having a full street ported engine, you will need both the intake and exhaust templates.

you don't need them both, but if you port the intake and not the exhaust, the exhaust becomes a bottle neck. If you port the exhaust and not the intake, its not a full street port, although it will show very slight improvement. A full street port, along with a header, and a more free flowing exhaust is a great combination.

Once the engine is apart how hard is it to actually port it yourself using the templets for a first timer? Can a beginner actually do a good job on it or do you recomend having a pro go for it?

Yeah, basically thats what I was trying to illustrate.

A beginner can do it if he has a steady hand, has the right tools, and knows what the finished product should look like. If you have any bad plates or rotor housings to practice on, I would try it on those first.
