Pop Pop Pop goes the mound on deceleration!

Hey ya'll-

Lately when I let my foot off of the accelerator to slow down, I hear a constant "pop pop pop pop pop pop"....kinda like backfiring, though not as loud. Does anyone know what this may be a symptom of? My guesses are clogged cats, maladjusted TPS, running rich, bad timing, ignition (though sparks and cables are new)...

Any ideas?

Right on-

On my GSL, it was a bad shutter valve, but I don't know if it'd be the same on your -SE.

Try turning the TPS screw clockwise, one turn at a time. It should decrease it considerably. My se will pop every now and then, I just live with it.

Probably running rich.....
Check your timing. Put it to stock.
Then adjust your TPS.. I'm sure there are alot of write up here on how to do it. It's also in the Haynes manual as well.

Good Luck

I'm glad brownmound posted this, I was about to post the same question. Memo to self check shutter value on GSL. I know my timing is on the money and I've already adjusted my TPS. Although I've grown used to my 7 making weird noises. hehehehehhe

Sounds like an exhaust leak to me? Usually when a shutter valve is bad, it makes a honking type sound when bad...

I was told it's due to a bad ACV, but I found that the popping decreased/nearly went away if I made sure there were no exhaust leaks.

When the '80 was stock it would pop and bang like the 4th of July! It was so predictable, I could floor it and time when I let off so that it would bang right as I'd pass under a bridge. Eliminated the air pump and ACV when the header went on... no more popping and banging.

I was really disappointed!

My -SE does the same thing... And it's getting progressively worse. (both the popping and the running rich)

When I start it in the garage it even smells like gas, esp if it hasn't been done in a few days.

When I decelerate it goes popopopopopop all the way down. Or if I accelerate at about 2/3rds throttle up to about 5k then let off. BANG! Not gunshot loud, but very easy to **** of cars behind me...
