Poor man's direct fire....

Recently there has been a lot of posts on using ignitors in parallel for a direct fire set-up. Then I read about the single ignitor set-up with two coils in series. Jeff20B wrote about it I think. My question is if the coils connect in series the resistance is doubled which would drop the voltage across the coils by half. So how does it work right?

It doesn't work right! I tried it before I went to the parallel ignitor setup and it would misfire like crazy above 7000rpm. To tell you the truth I didn't even expect it to work properly for the exact same reason you mentioned. I've recently switched back to the stock setup after running the parallel ignitor system for a while and honestly didn't notice any difference between the parallel ignitors and stock. Others HAVE posted good results with it so guess you'll have to try it for yourself. I dunno...maybe the extra spark helps if your carbs tuned poorly?

REVHED, did you mean the series version?

What kind of recurved dizzy are you using? Does it advance to 25º like a GSL-SE dizzy?

Hmm

All I know is, I absolutely adore my MYAPMDFIS (Makes You A Poor Man Direct Fire Ignition System ). You know, the MSD setup. I stopped having misfire-over-7k problems when I switched from BR8ET's to cut-down Autolite 3923's. I'm still experimenting with gapping, I did my 15.1 run on .045" gap, now I've got a .030 gap but there's no noticeable difference to the butt dyno.

I tried the series version right at the start when it came up at Mazspeed. Wouldn't rev past 7000rpm so I ditched it and went to DLIDFIS. I've been using it up till now but I didn't like it cluttering up my engine bay so I went back to stock and I really don't notice any difference between DLIDFIS and stock. I had the dizzy recurved by one of the workshops here to improve throttle response. I have about 10* advance at idle on leading and 20* total. Leading-trailing split is 10*.

Rob Golden said that on an NA engine, wasted sparks help quite a bit if the AF mixture is not perfect. But if it is perfect, then maybe you don't need it. Unless you corner hard all the time.

So your dizzy only advances by 10* total? That is pretty cool! Maybe I'll keep using my 20* advancing dizzy and not even worry about my 25* dizzy.

Who's Rob Golden? What he said makes sense though. I spent quite a bit of time on the dyno getting my carb tuned right so my A/F mixtures are spot on. That's probably why I didn't see any difference. Anyway, I still think DLIDFIS is a really good idea. I just didn't want it cluttering my engine bay.
