pic of first gen ignitor?
A strange request, i know. However i would like a pic of a 1st gen iginitor if anyone has one, so i can make sure i'm looking at the right part.
i have the distributor and the coils, is the ignitor built on the coils like they are on a 2nd gen?
if not can i use 2nd gen igintors on first gen coils?
i saved this electrical part for last because i don't really know much of anything about the electronics on this car .

The ignitors are two black boxes on the side of the distributor on the 1st gens. The ignitors should have 'J-109' marked on them. This assumes that the distributor is from a '81-'85 car. The '79 used points, so it doesn't have ignitors and the '80 had the ignitors mounted remotely. The 2nd gen ignitor will not work. The 2nd gen ignitor uses a 5volt square wave from the ECU to fire whereas the 1st gen uses a kindof lop-sided sine wave from the VR sensors in the distributor. The VR sensor voltage increases with RPM (can reach 50 to 100 volts).

Yes, you can use the 2nd gen leading coil pack to upgrade your ignition system. I have done this and it is well worth the effort (about 20 minutes). Check the FAQ section for a link to the instructions....

oh snap i don't have those ignitors. is it hard to use the 2nd gen ignitors Kentetsu? I can't usually understand wiring diagrams, so it would have to pretty much be spelled out for me.

Here's the link with the instructions...

If you already have a 2nd gen leading coil pack, then you're already halfway there. Basically, you pull the backing plate off and remove the internal ignitor, then reroute a couple of the wires. Very simple procedure... Check out the writeup and let me know if you have any questions. I have some photos of the insides after the modifications are made and I'll post them when I get home if you need them.

Ken: I think he is missing the J-109 ignitors on the distributor. He will need them to either go stock or use the 2nd gen coil upgrade.
*a*jones*: Do you know what year the distributor is from? It is probably '81-'85. You may have some issues if it is a '79 or '80. Check the 1st gen for sale section for the ignitors. Also check ebay. Usually you can get them for around $15 or so each. You can use the 2nd gen leading coil for the leading spark (you will use the 1st gen ignitor, not the 2nd gen) as Kentetsu pointed out. The rest is pretty easy if you have the wiring harness as well.

oh, ok thanks man, i don't recall seeing anything quite like what that picture shows on it though.
So now for my next question, what do you wire the ignitors up too?
Thanks to everybody for the input and patience!

The ignitor gets wired to the coil... or at least one of the wires coming from it. The second may be power? I'll check properly when I get home from work, or someone else can probably tell you.
