Phantom current in the dome light

I have an S model and my dome light (incandescent) bulb blew. I had an LED bulb that fit, so I replaced it. Now, in the off position, the LED has a faint glow.

has anyone rebuilt the switch before? That’s the only thing I can think of that is causing the lights to glow.

I’m hoping someone has information, before I try and open things up.

I have checked all the wiring and seems correct and have a good factory ground. Tomorrow, I’ll see how much of a draw it’s pulling, but can’t be much.

Pulling the fuse block this weekend to fix some crappy wiring the PO did that is unrelated.

thanks!

The issue is the resistance, or lack thereof, of the LED.

This is what I used, and they seem to be working.

But shouldn’t there be zero volts in the off position? I tested this in a side marker socket and it doesn’t glow like the dome light socket.

I'll admit, electrical stuff isn’t my strength!

The dome light is a three-position switch that always has power, and the ground gets switch out. The ground can come from the switch on the light itself or from the door open switch.

If the LED is light in any way, it's getting power and a ground from somewhere.

Thanks! Since the weather is so crappy today, I’ll dig into this. I fear the problem lies in the radio installation. The PO installed it with a number of other things and he was a total hack! It’s taken years to unwind some of the nonsense he did.

This snowballed quickly! Took down the review mirror to clean switch, took apart the dash to rewire the stereo and check grounds.

the bezel had some scratches so I sanded and painted that. Took the fuse block out to rewire the stereo powers and fix some other nonsense that was done.

Since I had the battery disconnected, pulled it and repainted the metal tray and hold down.

now, I’m waiting on parts, so everything is on hold till August, unfortunately. At least everything will be wired correctly going forward.

Hopefully I can get it back on the road before deer suicide season starts!

I'll bet you get it all back together and the dome light LED will STILL glow faintly!

I've noticed that same effect in household switching for LED bulbs, actually. I installed an exterior light on a timer and the LED bulb seemed dimly lit all the time. Turns out, the timer switch was allowing current flow even when off, and the bulb has just enough juice to work faintly. Put in an incandescent and back to normal operation,

Hopefully, final update. I cleaned up all the wiring and put everything back together, except the stereo install, waiting on new harness.

the LED dome light now has zero glow. In the off position, nothing, but works in both ON and with the door.

I’ll post back if it comes back after I install the stereo. That won’t be till August according to shipping.
