Pacesetter muffler?

Hi I wanted to see if anyone has used the pacesetter muffler. I know that as far as headers go the racing beat headers as supposed to be quieter, last longer, and just be better quality. However, I thought maybe the pacesetter muffler would be quiet enough and high enough quality for me (trying to keep it to a low growl).

Everything I've heard about pacesetter says its crap through and through. The headers are thin wall tubing and not tuned length, the mufflers are low quality and just simply don't last long. I haven't heard what they sound like though, maybe they are reasonable on the sound level? Either way, I would save your money and buy a quality muffler I think. Racing beat aren't too horribly expensive when you consider how high the quality is, and they are direct fit in place of the original.

Thanks for the advice, I am leaning toward the racingbeat setup. However, this is still based on hearsay, anyone have first hand experience?

What he said....but you never know, perhaps pacesetter has changed suppliers recently? Why don't you give it a try and let us know?
If it were me, I'd save the time, money and agravation and just go with R/B. If you're looking to save money watch the FOR SALE section...might take a while, but someone is always posting an exhaust system.

One of my cars came with one. It was pretty quiet, actually. Surprisingly quiet for a single-muffler exhaust system. It wasn't a performance muffler by any stretch, but it was a pretty servicable OE replacement.

It's been something like seven-eight years since I had it, though. I *think* that I neded up removing it because the inlet pipe broke off, which is a normal failure mode for mufflers that are poorly supported.

All those hangers in the OE exhaust system? Use 'em. Don't just hang it by the engine and the two hangers by the bumper, or you'll have endless problems.

The stud holes will need to be ovaled out on Pacesetter products, right peejay? I recall you complained about that.

I guess saying that something needs to be done is complaining nowadays

I have yet to see any aftermarket exhaust parts that don't require modification in some way.

It seemed like complaining back then. Like you were generally unhappy with the parts.

i've used a pacesetter muffler and its a waste of money. the sound isn't that great and the inner tips are yellow and look tacky..and the flange warped quickly and it rusted faster than bare metal in an acid rain storm. racing beat all the way. you get what you pay for.

All I had to read was "yellow" and "rasp". I'm gonna keep an eye out for a gently used RacingBeat muffler! Thanks for saving me time and money!

Yes sir. Bought the pacesetter...gave it a shot. Like what has been stated....gained rust quickly in a spot or two due to the high heat from the exhaust causing the crappy paint to melt off. There's a rust spot, and where there isn't rust, there seems to be a lot of white from the lack of paint hanging on.

It DOES fit the stock setup perfectly, but its junk in my opinion. Sounds like a maxima and its not nearly as fast as one OOOOO

I had a PS header on the car when I bought it. CRAP. It rusted through and the flange welds broke from rust. I installed a new RB header about a year ago and there was a noticeable difference in sound and power. The best part is it still looks new. BTW i have the whole RB system and it's great. I just wish the muffler was louder.

Here it is a whole year later.

i bought a pacesetter for my first fb, an 85 GSL with a 12a. It was quieter than stock, the yellow tips faded to dark brown/black after 2 drives, and the car was significantly less powerful. I tried to install it myself and couldnt, had to take it to the muffler guy and have him cut/weld it into place as it didnt fit the car stock. if i recall correctly he had to redo the over-axle tubing even. It also didn't align with stock muffler mounts.

My next setup was a Racing Beat, which the muffler guy (and myself) were totally impressed by. Ever since then i've run Racing Beat. There are other companies out there that may be able to make more peak HP, but all around durability, performance, installation, and aesthetics, Racing Beat is all you need
