Oxygen Sensor

I looked through the FSM, I searched through the forum (more results than before!!) and can't find a proper answer. I need an o2 sensor on my car. 1984 GSL-SE. It's running rich. It's probably the stock sensor, too. What part # do I get, I've never ever had to replace one so i don't know what to do. I hear I don't need one, it works only at highway speeds, sometimes at cruise, please edumacate me!!

If you are running rich I would lean towards the coolant temp sensor for the ECU. What makes you think that the engine is running rich?
As far as the O'2 sensor goes, it's a good idea to replace it every 60k.

The GSLSE can use the Bosch Universal O2 sensor, should be about 20 bucks at any auto parts store. It's well worth it, if your old sensor is bad it will pay for itself on the first long highway drive you take.

One thing though, the o2 sensor really only helps the car when you are applying constant throttle on the highway. It doens't really do anything for city driving.

It's a common part # which is 11027 for the universal that you use your connector from the old one or 12054 which has the connector on the end/

For one the smell...major gas smell. Also I'm told it's running lean too...so I think an oxygen sensor would help at least in one of those areas. The plugs were charred (mechanic friend said it was running lean to look like that).

And yeah, with everything else on the car, I think it's stock. The guy didn't seem to replace much, not that he needed to with how little he drove the car. I guess I'm catching all the things that need done now. It's kind of nice, though, learning how to do all of it. Now, the coolant temp sensor, what entails replacing/repairing that?

Can you post a picture of one of the old plugs?

The coolant temp sensor is located at the back of the water pump housing. Replacement is straight forward. Sometimes it's easier to remove the alternator to get a better vantage point to remove it.

I just changed the O2 in mine not too long ago, it's cheap at any parts store, it's just a 1 wire deal. However I wish you the best of luck getting the old one out. Make sure you have a heat wrench and big breaker bar.

I'll get a picture of one of the old plugs. I saved one just for this purpose. I'll get a picture after school.
