OK, so I am sharing this with all the generations on this forum.

I search here and there and everywhere trying to find a solution to this problem and found only 2 options, but not this one.

While installing my Autometer Oil Pressure sending unit today, I found 2 problems.

1) The sending unit is too close and interferes with the block,
2) The thread pitch is 1/8 NPT, and the block is 1?8 BSPT

The two options I found were this:

1) Try to get it started then just torque it in (fubaring the threads for any other use)
2) Get an adapter that is 1/8 NPT female and 1/8 BSPT male

The only problem really is that the adapter is about $9.00 and has to be shipped (good luck finding it locally) and the "ram it home" solution is destined for problems.

Here is the simplest solution, and I don't know why I haven't seen it before.

Cut the shank with the threads and the hex section from the old sending unit. Drill and tap that shank for 1/8 NPT. Now not only do you have the required distance from the block to clear, but you also basically have the adapter already there to use.

Note this is only for those of us using the stock sender location.

Many thanks to David Grafinkle. He knew exactly what to do when I asked him for a resolution. He said that is something they used to do years ago when there were no adapters.

How odd, the sender i took out of my '85 was NPT.

At least, it was the same diameter, thread pitch, and was tapered...

The BSPT and NPT are very similar. Some people have had luck MAKING the NPT fitting fit, but it really shouldn't.

They are still tapered none the less. But the acutual pitch is something like 27 versus 28.

Mine wouldn't even start to thread!

You are correct.

NPT has a slightly larger pitch than BSPT. Hence, a male BSPT will work in a female NPT (with some sealant) but not the other way around.

Nice solution, I ended up going with the racing beat block that goes under the oil filter pedastal because I am running both pressure and oil temp guages, but nice job.

If its not the beehive system, tapping the oil fitting in the rear banjo bolt is "FREE."

I tapped the banjo bolt on one engine and its gauge is a whole lot more animated than some others I've seen. It's so sensitive that it actually shows the MOP in action at low RPM. There's a little dip in the guage a couple times per second.

Or maybe that little dip is when the shaft is at an angle which allows the oil to flow into it? That's more likely because the MOP doesn't pass much oil.

I also did the canabalising of the stock mushroom last year. It worked great when two BSP to NPT adaptors failed (leaked, cracked etc). I may have to do it again when I install a set of guages in an RX-4.

Woah... I read this thread when it was originally posted and just sort of passed it by, not really getting it.

So now I went looking for info related to the beehive oil cooler, and came accross this thread. I read it again and realized, "dude, that's ingenious!"

Simple, elegant solution. I forkin' love it.
