Oil Filters Who uses what?
Fram Oil Filters!! O'Reilly Auto Parts had a display showing the insides of a Wix, Fram, Store Brand, GM....... oil filters.
I will never spend the time doing on oil change and then **** on my work by installing a Fram Oil Filter again!!!
Good thing I've been changing the oil and filter every 2 months all these years.

Having discovered that Racing Beat (which is just down the street from my office, lucky me) stocks the Mazda black OEM filters at a reasonable price, I decided to try one this time around.
They are so small... going from the oversized K&N to this little bitty filter was a bit of a shock, but it sure sits nice on the pedestal. And it was about half the price, which is nice.
I am happy to report that it neither exploded nor puked oil upon startup, and oil pressure and such all looked fine.
I've only logged 3 miles since the change (gas fill-up), so I can't really say anything about filtration at this point.

I use the mobil 1 because its identical to the K&N for significantly less and just as good as the OEM filters.
Also its black to it fools Ray for awhile when he sees it

I'm giving Bosch a try on my new 1985 GSL, the Silver One (not the Gray One Tim!).
It looks cool, is not orange, blue or yellow and is not named after an oil company. Also it's black.

I have about 2000 miles on the car and the new Bosch filter and it hasn't exploded yet.

I always watch the video of the disassembling of the RE Amemiya's GT 300 3 rotor race engine and I noticed that they use the factory Mazda oil filters. Let just say you could call me a "big fat copy cat" because if they use them for racing they got to be good filters.
i use only Mazda filters and have been for the past 7 years or so. for me, now, the only time i use anything else is when i'm breaking in an engine. i'll use something else until my first change since it's only a few hundred miles.
yes, as far as i can tell, the height was the only difference. before i started using Mazda filters exclusively, i went many years of buying the Rx-4 filter for my car whenever i did an oil change because i thought it would be better - possibly i had read it somewhere and just took it for gospel. well as it turned out, i could no longer find them and i had to make a decision. i went to Mazda and asked for a T2 (at the time it was the next best 13B in my eyes
) oil filter and was shocked to see how much smaller it was. it was then that i realized they're all pretty much interchangeable. just goes to show you about size versus actual function.

I like the Toyota filters we use at work, they come with a nice o-ring that's pre-greased and they fit together nicely and their construction is pretty damn good.
I'll see if any of them fit on the engine and test it out when I get the engine running.

The wix, GM Brand, and O'Reily were very similar with the Wix being obviously the best.
I would feel better about my oil changes if I just changed the filter every other change if I used the wix.

O'Reilly brand is made by FRAM so I asked the Gods of Rotary rebuilding and racing what do they recommend??
Napa or wix filter<----<< mazdatrix
Mazda OEM or K&N Pro<----<<< Banzai Racing
rotary13b1 and rotary-works didn't get back to me. atkins did't have an e mail address.
Since the hose under my beehive oil cooler blew in 1996 (13 yrs old, 90K miles), and its replacement survived 16 years 150K miles, I think that the prior owner had Jiffy Lube or walmart do the oil changes. And the hot motor oil dripped down on the hose because the over worked harried minimum wage worker couldn't care less.
so I always do my own oil changes and will happily spend the extra $$$ on a filter endorsed by the expert professional guru rotary engine racing gods..legends, etc.

i always use k&n or wix. they have the highest filtration rating. stay away from fram...they are single filtration filters and suck ***!
k&n may be a lil expensive....so i would head down to walmart....yes walmart, and pick up a shitton of wix filters and oil. its hella cheep there...damn store has everything

Wix or OEM all the way.
microguard oil filter cut open. it has cardboard end caps and top by pass looks the same as a FRAM.
a $3.69 oil filter, you get what you pay for
the beef I have against genuine mazda parts is that they once gave and the me the wrong plugs ( always compare your replacement parts to what is being replaced), and the genuine mazda parts master clutch cylinder leaked. And the b-tards would not replace it nor refund my $$$

I use the Wix one.
I used the Wix one last couple of oil changes. I did some online research and the Mobile 1 and the Wix were #1 at different places. I was going to buy the Mobile 1 one recently but it wasn't in stock. I asked the parts guy what he preferred and he said the Wix one due to price. A $7 difference in price is not worth worrying about when your talking about such an important part, especially in a rotary but I didn't want to order it and I generally don't take a part's counter guys advice on an RX-7 or anything else propulsion system related though he did get the correct input shaft bearing the first time and he's seems unusually knowledgeable for the parts guy, plus he's around my age. The pimply faced 17 year old parts guy I don't generally consider an expert on anything except maybe the air freshener.
In fact, I managed to destroy my less than a week old one when I had to pull my tranny, I still don't know how it got dented but it was and I had the engine supported by a jack stand all along so I had to buy another one and they still didn't have the Mobile 1 filter in stock so Wix it is again.
Funny how Fram is looked down upon these days. 30 years ago you didn't have much choice and they were decent back then but they now have a terrible reputation which I don't know if it is deserved or not.

What do you think of the Idemetsu?
I've always used Castrol 20W-50 even though I live in Sacramento. I had two different guys I considered rotary engine experts (both were excellent builders one fielded a racer) say to use Castrol exclusively but the Idemetsu isn't that much more and oil and filter is no place to cheap out or antifreeze for that matter.

Idemitsu is the OEM oil. given that a street rotary isn't picky about oil, it isn't a big deal which brand you use.
in a track car though Idemitsu did develop oil specifically for the Lemans rotary engines, so they know more about it than anyone.

the OEM filter FAQ. there are several.
the filters come in two sizes short (B6Y1) and tall (JEY0). if you actually went and looked up the part number the tall is for 1980 and earlier, the short is 1981 and later. although the filters will interchange.
shorts:
the JDM filter, made by Toyo Roki, black part number B6Y1-14-302A. this is the best quality filter. they stack the filter media so that there is something like 30% more filter in the same size can than the previous JDM filter (N3Y6 i think). sold in the US thru about 1998, they still come over from grey market suppliers.
the US filter, now white, B6Y1-14-302A-9A. it looks like a decent US built filter. this is what the US dealers currently are supplied. the white really sucks. retail price is $10.25.
the Canadian filter. B6Y1-14-302A-CA. this is the blue one. i've never seen one in person. also $10.24 retail.
tall filters.
there is the japanese made JEY0-14-302A which was supplied until 1998, and still comes over on the grey market, like the B6Y1.
there are two US supplied filters, first is the JEY0-14-302A-9A, which is black, made by tennax.
and G6Y0-14-302-P1, which seems ok, but its white and looks horrid. retail is $7.96
there is also the N3R1-14-302, which is for the 2009+ Rx8. its black, japanese made, list is $9.37

RX-8 Club says that the RX-8 series 2 (2009+) car runs at a higher oil pressure so the relief valves are different. But the RX-8 series 1 car uses the same oil filter spec that has been around for 30 years so the other OEM spec'd filters that you mentioned are OK for our cars.
The discussion was hard to follow, there was passionate bitching about Mobile 1, and of course FRAM

it is really hard to get any useful info off that site. the early Rx8's use the same filter, and run the same oil pressure as any other rotary. the exception is the FD, that runs oil pressure like the late Rx8, however they didn't change filters for it.
