Oil Filters Who uses what?

I have been looking into what oil filter is best and I've always assumed it's either the mobile 1 or a K&N. Those are just so hard for me to find for these cars anymore. What is everyone else using? And are all of the oil filters interchangeable? I know they say that they aren't, but a lot of gm ones are the same way to where it's just a taller filter. I run Royal Purple. I don't think that'll make too much of a difference, but that's what I run. Please no debate over whether or not synthetic oil is good for a rotary. I think that's been done to death.

Alot of people swear by the Blue Mazda oil filter. Try going to your nearest dealership and grabbing every single one they have.

I think i like the black mazda oil filter (feels heavier and more robust than the blue IIRC)

Also the Napa gold filters seem good (or WIX, believe they are the same filter)

Huge debates about fram and some others, just best to stick to what you know is good...Mazda and wix products

Oh sorry, I may have got those mixed up. Maybe it was the blue to stay away from and the black to buy.... Forget I said a word.

Ok so most people are in agreement for the OEM. But back to the other part of my question. I have a rotary engineering turbo alternative 4 port 13b. According to the charts it takes a different filter than ohh let's say a normal 79. But I have a strange feeling that they will all work the same anyways. Maybe just a differenc ein height of the filter?

I used to use Fram filters, and I never had an issue with them. Switched to K&N, but based on the linked article may switch to the MobilOne filters due to similarity, and lower cost.

I've never used an OEM filter... never even considered it, but based on feedback here, perhaps I should. Going to a dealer for an oil filter just somehow seems silly.

Ray Crow at Malloy Mazda is your best bet for OEM stuff. I assume he is still there. Just do a search and his number will come up. Free shipping and discount pricing.

As far as what filter I've used.....OEM on the 3rd gen, first gen OEM or Wix or similar. Race cars Fram or Wix racing filter.

wix filters have a built in check valve to keep oil in it so on start up you have oil. NASCAR uses wix. Also napa golds are the same as wix. Lately ive been using wix.

Wix here. Specifically the Napa Gold 1347 (the biggest one that fits).

Do your local mazda dealerships still deal in these filters? God knows autozone doesn't do crap! What part numbers are these if you don't mind. Especially on the Wix.

That little black filter is used on lots of Mazda's, my 2002 Protege uses the same one. I'm sure your local Mazda dealer would have them.

Reading upside down from the photo above, it looks like the parts number is:

86Y1 14 302 9A

A word of caution about replacement filters, I bought some aftermarket filter for the protege a few years ago using the selection guide at Autozone. I installed it, added the oil and started the engine. I about a minute the oil light came on and the engine started to make noises. I shut it off and looked under the car - that's where most of the oil was.

Turns out the seal on the aftermarket filter didn't line up correctly with the oil filter seat on the protege. I've been using the Mazda filters every since.

Just in case some don't want to wade thru the post that Doc linked, this will take you straight to. I use Mobil filters at the moment because I'm using Mobil 1 oil and I can get 5 qts of it and the filter for $30 at work(Autozone). I don't know how anybody else's Autozone works but we carry a pretty decent selection of filters for the RX. AFAIK all RX filters have the same thread and base, just the sizes are different for space constraints

I went out and got the mobile 1 m1 104. It's for an 85, but it fit just fine. I figured they would most likely be all the same, but I wasn't sure. Like I said before it is a 74 13b, and I just didn't want to screw anything up.

i always use k&n or wix. they have the highest filtration rating. stay away from fram...they are single filtration filters and suck ***!

k&n may be a lil expensive....so i would head down to walmart....yes walmart, and pick up a shitton of wix filters and oil. its hella cheep there...damn store has everything

^^^To be specific, stay away from the Fram extra guard filters(the orange ones with the black grip). The Fram Tough guard(silver ones) or Fram Racing filters are actually pretty good

honestly is up to how deep your pockets go, as long as you take care of your car it'll have your back no matter what so get whatever you can afford and make sure you keep up with the maintenance and it'll be good, i've had K&N, and Fram, and Bosch, and ...some other and they've all done great, just make sure you keep your maintenance up.
