Oil control-ring failure.

Title should have said " I FAIL HARD "

Someone verify that my worst fear is correct, I have this S4 engine in my S2, just recently fired it up to get her out of hibernation. Well she keeps smoking like a MoFu regardless of revs or duration

The engine has about 2500km/1600miles of smokeless driving, just untill one day sitting at an intersection trafficlight -*KAPOOFFF* Smoke allover.
I think it's an oil control-ring that is screwed.

The video shows the smokescreen when reving the motor.

Is this a recent rebuild? If so, one of the o-ring carriers may have broken, unless you added 4 times the needed pre-mix to the fuel.

Yeah, this engine is like a year old, but only 1600 miles on it.
I reused the OCR's and springs, they looked great so why not.

I just placed an order with Atkins for some 12A parts, time to get that Streetport/S5 Turbo together.

Thanks Mike, I guess the video does not show all the little shitty issues like the shoddy paintjob, disgusting wintertires, rotting rubbers all over and such

Here's the old video, before i made the double muffler for it.
Quite a different note.

Is the oil consumption off the charts or just moderate?

Were these OEM or aftermarket oil control ring O-rings? The aftermarket ones seem to die randomly sometimes, which is why we never use them. If it was sitting, there is also a possibility that surface rust on the plates ate up the oil control rings in short order. Usually a cracked oil control ring happens pretty quickly or not at all, after a rebuild. 1,600 miles is quite a ways for that to happen, though still possible. Other possibilities include chromeflake or carbon pieces getting wedged under a seal (usually an intermittent problem; not continuous) or a foreign object getting injested. If your thermal bypass valve fails open, that can seriously cook the oil control ring O-rings...often you don't even find the pieces.

Just some random ideas.

Did you use the viton oil orings? I've heard these can have a high failure rate. Mazda OEM seems to be the most reccommended.

Oil O-rings are from the Basic Rotary Aviation Overhaul kit.

I havent realy driven the car since the smokescreen was laid, so I can't really tell if oil consumption is way off.
Thanks for the input Blake, I'll just go ahead and rip it apart. have never opened up a fresh rebuild before, my calipers are eager to get to work
