Is this normal?

My '85 base model has crappy brakes to start with. I was wondering why the back brakes have a hard line leading to the L-rear brake and then a hard line from the L-rear brake to the R-rear.? I have normally seen bleeders on both rear brakes and not just one. I had to replace the master cylinder and the L-rear wheel cylinder and that is when I found it. Are all FB's like this?

Your going to find a hardline with almost any drum brakes as you have to run a flare with a fitting to thread into the wheel cylinder. Disk brakes you can have banjo and all sorts of combinations.

I thought it was weird also. I mean, how do you bleed the lines if there is a bubble on the other piece. The one that goes from bleeder to the other side.

The Drum Brake axle has a soft line that leads to the axle. Then a single hard line that leads to the drivers side. Then another hard like that goes from the drivers side to the passenger side. The bleeder screw is on the drivers side, only one. ALL Drum brake rear-ends are like this.

The disc brake rear has a soft line to the axle, then a splitter that goes to each caliper that has its own bleeder screw.

Perhaps all RX's with drums are like that, but it's not all that common on other cars. Typically there are bleeders at each wheel cylinder. Another quirky thing about our cars to learn to love.

My shadow had that setup.

When you think about it, if the fluid goes into the L cyl and then back out to the R cyl, if you're bleeding the R cyl, the air bubbles move towards it. Saying "what if there are bubbles at the L cyl" is like saying "what if there are bubbles in the middle of the hard line three inches forward of the fuel filter? There should be a bleed valve there!".

It's in-line, so it counts like part of the line.
