Automatic starters are a gear reduction type, manual starters are direct drive. You can mix/match the different years of manual starters, though. Should be easy to find a used one or a rebuilt one from an autoparts store.

One starter has 11 pinion teeth and the other has 13, so they can't have the same gear pitch and root diameter, therefore they are incompatible.
But you can get a remanufactured starter for less than $100 from several sources, including rockauto.com, etc., and maybe at your local autostore. But I don't like remans, I've had a couple fail and it's a damn nuisance.
So I like the starter I pull from the 7 at the Pick'n Pull, especially on half price day. It's only about $10-$20 and will maybe outlast a reman. I replaced 3 starters on 3 Rx-7s 3 years ago (in the same month!), and so far one of the remans is erratic, one is good, and the PnP starter is working like a champ on my DD SE.
YMMV.
But the advantage to a PnP starter is you can keep the core and get a rebuild kit for a small part of the money you saved and rebuild that core at your leisure. All you really need is new brushes, a little emory cloth to spiff-up the commutator, and a new oilite nose bushing (you can even turn the old one 180 degress and re-use it, since all the radial load is away from the ringgear - I used to get 4 rebuilds out of one bushing on an old Fiat I had). Sometimes you can even spiff up the old brushes with that same piece of emory cloth, thus reducing your repair cost to *free*!
