Nikki Secondaries/stumble

Ok guys, so as of yesterday, whenever I hard accelerated (redline to redline, or near redline) starting from standstill, once I hit third gear about 5k, it would sound like sputtering/spitting. As of today, it will do this whenever the secondaries are opening. It does not matter how much, any secondary movement at all causes it to cough. I have mechanical secondaries, so I can bring the primaries to redline with nothing wrong. I had fuel pressure set at 2psi, but then after tonight I bumped it to 3. It rode great on the highway.

Looking back, the last time it rode great was when I was chasing a viper down the interstate. 4th to the floor until 100mph, but thats nothing

Anyone with anything?

Brand new fuel filter about 2 months old, and a carter fuel pump. I know the fuel pump is good, I can hear it running and it is only about 7 months old. I cannot think of anything besides something may be lodged in the secondaries themselves. I am thinking of taking the filter set-up off the carburetor and hitting the secondaries, and seeing if there is any more fuel pouring out of one than the other.

I hope I can get this fixed by the weekend, I got a meet in Atlanta and Statesville, and I would hate to hit the highway without secondaries

Your fuel filter can clog up after one day if you get crap in your tank. Its an easy, cheap replacement, that could very well be causing your problem. Don't dismiss it so quickly. At least take the time (which is free) to jack the car up and pull it off and see what kind of shape it's in. Good luck.

Well I got a spare one laying around here so I may just stick it on tomorrow if I get home from work with enough light.

Keep the ideas coming! I am having no luck with this cars carburetor problems. Stock, then full N/A modified with OER 45, and now full N/A with nikki, and still problems

Classic signs of a plugging fuel filter, particilarly in the upper gears on a long hard pull.

Check in the carb and make sure any filters or screens on the fuel inlet are clear as well. I think the Nikki has some screens to catch crud on the inlets.

Did it just start doing this or has this been a problem from day one? Maybe try returning it and getting a new one. Ok Sam just kidding.

That Nikki was rebuilt without the inlet screens. I have yet to find a set worth reuseing. Stu came up yesterday, and I took the car for a drive. It was real late, and I didn't get to look under the car at the filter. But, I believe that is probably the culprit. It felt like it was running out of gas when the secondarys would kick in. Try replacing the fuel filter. If it doesn't clear up, than it's probably got trash in the carb. We'll have to pull it off, and clean it out.

I'll put my old Fram back on when I get back home. Only had it on for about a month and it is about 2-3 times the size.
