Need input fast

Got a S-5 ready to rebuild. Talked to Pineapple racing...$4000 for a street-ported performance rebuild (enlarged oil passages, new housings and such) I know they have a great reputation and Rob has been excellent with all the info he has given me. Today I came across Rotary Reliability & Racing in Santa Ana CA. They have a turnkey S5 with all the stuff Pineapple is offering plus new rotors, hardened stationery gears, light steel flywheel AND a fuel injection setup for $5000. They claim 190 hp at the wheels. Now I'm torn. Thing is, and this is why I need quick input, I'm headed to Portland on Wed so that would be a perfect time to take my engine to Pineapple. Anyone know anything about RR&R? Help me out here!

Also, look for a list of parts I want to get rid of coming soon. I've got 1st gen RX7 parts in storage and I'm tired of paying to store parts I'll never use. Got something you need??? PM me.

Prices sound about right.
I paid $4500 for my Mazdatrix rebuilt S5 streetport with all the options and new housings/rotors/seal.

190HP at the wheels is pretty mild, that must be with stock turbo,EFI and boost levels.A streetport S5 TII with nothing else, would put you around 225HP @ crank.
$1000 bucks for the new rotors, flywheel, and factory EFI stuff isnt too huge a bargain, but its not a bad deal.At the very least, itll save you some legwork searching for all the stuff to bolt up to your fresh new block.........have no opinion about the two builders, never used either, but Ive definately heard of them.

No turbo and it's not factory EFI. RR&R claims 250 at the shaft, but only 190 at the wheels. Seems like should be higher at the wheels with 250 at the shaft.

25% driveline losses is at the high end,but not unheard of.

To get a S5 N/A up to 250HP means your not likely to have much torque, which is what street cars outta have.Is either engine a 6 port, or are they 4 port TII blocks built for N/A operation?

Is smog an issue? No way aftermarket EFI is gonna get by smog.A fully stock EFI setup will pass with a streetport, but it depends on how aggresive the ports are.Ive never heard of anyone getting 250HP out of the stock N/A EFI,so if your planning on stock EFI,dont expect to see that much power.

What is your intended goal?
What type of induction, fueling, driving, powerband, mechanical setup,ect,..are you looking for?.....

If so,Im impressed.
Thats around a 75% increase in power with EFI thats for the most part, universally hated.....
Even I dare not push past about a 50% increase on my S5 TII control gear.My AFM is just about maxxed out on airflow, passing 14psi from a TO4B to a S/P engine.

Smog may/may not be an issue. I live near Seattle (King/Snohomish County), which requires a smog cert, but no visual inspection. I do have an address where I can register it that is in Skagit county, which does not require a smog cert. So it basically boils down to if I can pass or not.

I'm doing a ground-up rebuild with a widebody kit on an 85 GSL-SE. I've got RB springs/sway bars and Tokico gas shocks. Along with the rebuild/street-port I plan to run a light steel flywheel, Centerforce II clutch, 16 or 17" wheels (not sure what kind or what tires yet). I've pretty much ruled out a turbo because I'd like some longevity out of it and I think you lose that with a turbo..plus the S5 NA compression is too high.

As for driving, it will basically be a weekend driver. I'm after moderate performance for spirited street driving. No interest in racing really, but I do like to straighten some curves. I'll probably re-install the A/C and I've added a bit of weight with the sub box for my 2 Kicker 12's, that sit just behind the seats where the storage bins use to be.

If you are in a hurry and think the other company will give you a good service, by all means send your engine to them. We have a two and a half month backlog as it is. If you are not in a real hurry (which should be the case if you are even considering us), then don't rush into the decision...come visit our shop, see what we're about and then decide. Shipping an engine is cheap, so you can do it later. Getting it to us sooner does not move you up in line. In fact, we'd rather not have it here until we are ready for it anyway.

If you do plan on smogging it,the stock EFI is the only thing thats gonna get you by. Aftermarket EFI is simpler and more powerful, but it has no way to control the air injection,ACV and other stuff that reduces emissions output.Rotaries are pretty big polluters and they are not easy to "squeek" by a smog test.

If you plan on running the stock S5 EFI,be prepared to do some research and get a S5 factory service manual. Its not a super hard swap, but there are some specific issues that have to be overcome when doing a S5 EFI conversion.Do pelnty of reading up and ask questions here,I and a few others have succesfully done S5 swaps and mine is even CA smog legal/certified.

Although its superior to S4 in many ways, most people avoid swapping in S5 EFI, in favor of the S4 because its more like the factory GSL-SE injection and bolts in easier.S5 EFI is smoother and more refined, using a better AFM,faster computor,a real check engine light, electronic oil metering pump(the problem) and improved intake manifold tuning.
S4 EFI is almost a direct copy of the GSL-SE injection, except with staged fuel injectors.
