need help...

my dads 82 has sitting for awile and I decided to try and get it running. I got it to run for about 5 seconds and then it would cut out. Fuel was pooling up and dripping out the exhaust manifold. So I figured it was flooding or something and decided to rebuild the carb.

I rebuilt the carb and stuck it back on. I got it to run if I choke it just right, but now I am getting a hell of a lot more fuel pooling up at the top of the engine block and dripping down to oil pan.

I was thinking that there is something with the fuel return, so I pulled the line and shoved it into a bottle to catch any fuel going back to the tank. I cranked it back up and shut her down after about 10 seconds. No fuel in the bottle.

What causes the fuel to return out of the carb and back to the tank?

Since you are new, start here. This is in the stickies at the beginning of the 1st gen forum. Scroll down, you will find a section on carbs.

Thnaks...

I read all that stuff about the carbs before I did my rebuild. I will pull the carb and check the air vent solenoid and recheck my float bowls height levels.

If I had an excess fuel problem dripping out of my carb before the rebuild and now I have more of a problem after; where do you think I messed up at?

thanks...

Fuel wll only go down the return line when the main line has reached its set pressure. If your floats are stuck then you are just pissin gas down the carb so fast the pump wont build up pressure in the line. Take a look at your sight glasses on the ole nikki (both!) I have one of those mirrors on a stick jobbies that makes it real easy to get a peak at the firewall side bowl sight glass. If one or both of your floats is stuck open (common problem with new needle valves). Sometimes tapping on the bowls frees the needle. If not, pull the air filter off (with the car off of course) and see if you can see gas dripping out of the nozzles in the throats. This is another sign of stuck floats or the float level being to high. If all that doesn't help pull the air horn off and stare at it until the fumes make you dizzy.

took carb off checked out everything and it all looked fine. stuck it back on and the damn thing started to leak fuel out my air vent solenoid.

i think i will smack it with a big hammer and try to unstick those needle valves. who knows...after starting this project, i have a lot more respect for mechanics. every once in awhile i will get so freaking frustrated i just want to start throwing **** around...

later....

Well, because if it was an aftermarket fuel pump then you might be pushing too much pressure for the carb...

yhea, i see where you are comming from. i have been trying to dig info in the archives and i have been reading about the psi on the after market fuel pumps, but no it is completely stock.

i am just about to go out in the garage and look at it some more. i am going to yank one more time and make sure it is all in order. it kind of makes feel like an idiot, because there really is nothing going on with the rebuild. so all this fuel leaking out everywhere is tripping me out.

i will get it running. i put new control arms and all new bushings up front. i am going to do the rear next week.

later....

i appreciate the reply's......

could it be leaking out of the bottom of the manifold, if it where, that would explain the not running right, with a vacuum leak and all. but if you can hold an idle at low rpm, i dout its leaking out the bottom. this is probably not the solution, but no one else had said it, and i wanted to atleast put it on the table.
