new problems.. help...

I drove the rex today and got some probs...

1. still idles rough, but doesnt backfire

2. wants to die when accelerator pedal is pushed down

3. upon takeoff it lopes and almost dies then takes off like (but still very sluggish)

4. shifts smooth but when let off clutch and give it gas it tries to die then it smooths out for a second and starts bucking and kicking

5. no get up and go like my stock 81 gsl had

6. when I got back to the garage it died in the middle of the street and I coasted to a stop

the exhaust stops at the header (no money for the presilencer yet) could it be that I dont have enough backpressure?

please help...

peace

The basics:

An engine needs air, fuel, and ignition source.

Is the air filter clean? The intake unblocked?

Is the fuel filter clean and the pump functioning properly?

Is the ignition system happily sparking away?

Alright, i don't know much about my car yet, but i can take a few stabs at this becase my car pulls this just about every other day.

First check your basics like manntis says, change your filters, plugs, wires, maybe even your dizzy cap and rotor. See if that helps. Get a pressure guage and test to see your getting the about 3.8-3 psi to your carb.

If your exhaust stops at the header, you got issues, but that should effect this in such a way as your desribe, but it dosen't help. *isn't that loud as hell?*.

Your studder with your accel could be two things that i can think of *keep in mind, i know jack*, your studder valve or your accel pump. Try plugging your Studder valve first and see if that helps. Its located on the rear drivers side of your carb on the bottom. The hose comes off the air cleaner and runs to the base of your carb. Take the hose off the air cleaner and block it with something and see if that helps. If not if might be your accel pump, and if thats going, you might as well get your carb rebuilt.

I know how much of a pain in the *** it is when your car runs crappy. Hope something on my list of babbleing helps. Good luck.

Pull the plugs...if they're soaked or show signs of a rich mixture, I'd hazard a GUESS that your regulator is not set at the pressure you think it's at....

Would that apply even though the fuel stays at the halfway point on the glass? or cause backfiring?
