how come they make 79 n 80s with 3 speed and 4 speed autos

they didnt. the auto trans choice for 79-83 was a JATCO 3 speed auto. the 4 speed manual was standard in the base rx-7 until 81, when the 5 speed was strandard and the 4 speed was dropped. pre 81, the 5 speed manual was an optional trans on the base. the GS came with the 5 speed standard. the 4 speed automatic was an option starting in 84, replacing the 3 speed from previous years, not available on the "S" model or GSL-SE.
