my exhaust got louder after messing with my intake?

ok. so i installed a RB header and custom exhaust on my DD. the next weekend i tried installing a dellorto. after a week of problems i went back to the nikki.

well, every since the first time i took the intake and manifold off my exhaust seems louded. i just changed the oil in my car and i had it up on ramps. i started it after i changed the oil and let it run a few minutes. i got out of the car to check to make sure everything was fine. and wow! my exhaust is a **** load louder than i thought.

all the noise is coming from the header/intake area. i checked a while back, the header bolts and nuts are tight. its a metal gasket so i assume its not bad. it was new when i installed the header.

i only have two ideas what it could be. could all the coolant spilling over the header have killed the gasket? could the EGR hole be causing this? i blocked off the coolant hoels to the intake and i thought about blocking off the EGR hole also, but i wasnt sure how.

any ideas?

Is the rectangular hole just below the intake ports in the center iron sealed off so that it can't leak? That is a likely exhaust leak.

thats what i figured the problem may be. i never had this problem before i tried installing the dellorto. i wonder if some how though there is a VERY small gap right there between the engine and manifold.

i was initially having problems with getting the car to run correctly. i eventually found out it was due to build up on the intake manifold gasket i was using. a spare from my neighbor cause i was in a bind.

is there any way to block off the EGR hole? the engine that came in my SA had the coolant and EGR blocked off. they had used pieces of a can and RTV for the coolant holes and filled the EGR hole with RTV. i never saw this engine run though.

You can wad up aluminum foil and shove it down the hole about an inch or so and then fill on top of that with something like the high heat exhaust manifold repair that you can get at Autozone called ThermoSteel. I've also used JB Weld and Devcon epoxy and even high temp silicone but silicone sometimes eventually fails.

I like the ThermoSteel for that better than JB Weld but JB Weld will work. You should be able to find some at Autozone. I bought some there about a month ago.
I've seen the engine run that was in your SA when you bought it. This may surprise you but I owned that car for a few years back in the mid 90's. It had a 6 port 12a in it when I owned it and then when Nick bought it, he put that 13b in it that it had when you got it.

Yep, that car had many different engines in it over the years. Also, it was originally an automatic car.
