is a Mx6 RWD conversion possible?
Hey I lined up an mx6 for super cheap, were talking under 100 bucks. It was running when it went under the side of a truck so it would cost about 600 to get it running and inspected again. But its got a pretty nice/clean engine in it that would be nice to drop into my rx7 first gen that may need an engine replacement. I know you guys don't like pistons but If I can get more power for a very low cost, why not instead of buying/rebuilt an A12 or b13 which could run me in the thousands... So I'm wondering since the Mx6 is FWD is there any tranny that will bolt onto it for a rwd conversion? I heard the supra tranny will bolt on but still unsure + don't see allot of those for sale cheap or in the wreckers. So do u guys know of any more common cars with rwd that have a tranny (preferably manual) that will bolt onto the mx6. Fixing it up is still an option but it would be nice to get the engine into my rx7.

As far as I know, the Mazda FWD engines had a specific bellhousing bolt pattern that needs an adapter to mount a rear drive transmission to. I can't really comment on that for sure though, so more research might be needed. It is possible though if you put enough money into it.
As for getting more power, the stock MX6 V6 engine was only rated at 160hp. A S4 NA 13b swap with a few small mods will get you just about the same power and will be far easier to mount and with a rebuild might cost $1500 for the entire swap with a good engine that doesn't need major parts. I could see a MX6 V6 conversion costing far more than that after you find a transmission that will mount or get an adapter made and driveshaft made as well. Along with the transmission problems, you also have the issue of mounting the engine and figuring out the rad and coolant lines, wiring, engine mounts themselves, and other things that can nickel and dime you.

What are you looking to do?
If you want to convert the MX-6 to rear drive - if you aren't already aware of what this will entail, it is beyond your fabrication ability.
If you want to use its engine in an A12 Datsun 1200 or a B13 Sentra (which is FWD anyway, not sure what this has to do with RWD) then we need to know what engine it is... if it's the 2.2l engine (1st-gen) then that's easy, that engine was used in B2200s. Hell, a localish guy used a B2200 transmission to put a Mazda diesel engine (which shared the F-engine bolt pattern apparently) in his RX-7.
If it's a 2nd-gen MX-6, I am not sure if the four cylinder FS engine shares bolt pattern with the earlier stuff. The KLDE 6-cylinder definitely never had a RWD application and you will have to fabricate a bellhousing, which isn't trivial either. (Yes, it's been done a few times, and IIRC there are CAD files for the bolt pattern somewhere)

If you are really daring, the SHOForum.com...I have a couple of friends who are really into these cars (myself included) and it is fast becoming a popular rwd conversion choice. The yamaha v6 will put out between 220-240 hp with 3 liters of displacement. They are dirt cheap and can be made to bolt up to mustang 5 speed trannies. Good luck

A V8 swap will probably run the same amount of $$$, be far easier due to aftermarket support swap kits and available documentation, fit in the engine bay and clear the hood easier (yes I am serious), fuel injection is optional, and would start with and be capable of far more power, just saying.

ive seen a couple of KL engined miata's, its a HUGE job, and for 170hp, it would be much simpler to just use a stock FC engine....

Hey guy thanks for the help! I found out that my seals are probably f*cked so I'm probably just gonna go with a 302 or try and rebuild it myself! Eithor way wish me luck

i don't know about a v6 swap, but i've seen a couple of builds with the 240 KA engine, they seem to do fairly well

I had an MX3 (great car... I'll get another someday). In that MX3 I had the KLDE motor. I had plans to convert to AWD with the 323 transmision.
The 323 will bolt right on to the K series engines and the four bangers. You will have to do a little cuting and welding to get the drive shaft to the rear end. BUT if you find a 323 with AWD its a simple as bolting the rear end from the 323 to your car, on the MX3.
After typing... I am thinking that the MX6 is longer and uses a different hub from the 323... But the transmission will bolt to your engine.
AWD is better than FWD, but I like RWD best of all
