MP70 Installed

So I took My Rex to another stereo shop and had them fix the mess Future Shop had made. The manager not only paid for everything but threw in a 4 year all-inclusive warranty (which is usually where Future Shop makes all their money)

Here's the stock dash with the nice-in-it's-day tape deck:

Here's my newly painted dash with the Sony MP70 and dash kit installed - notice the new sunglass tray too:

Here it is starting to open...

...and with the CD tray ejected

Wow, looks great!

I've got a JVC Kameleon deck in my 7, which is pretty cool (it does the flip-around stuff) but definitely not as acrobatic as that one. Also an Alpine 5 channel amp, Infiniti 4" in the front, Alpine 6x9" in the back, and a JL 10" sub which I usually leave at home.

You got Infinity 4" to fit in front? I tried, but they were 1/2 inch too thick

Yeah, but not the new ones. Mine are about 4 year old Infinity Reference series.

Also...

They aren't mounted behind the stock grills or anything, they're mounted with the infiniti surround and grills, and I had to turn the hood-puller thing around vertical for the driver's side speaker to fit.

I've got a sweet silver sunglass holder from the sunglass hut - it clips onto the sunvisor and looks pretty nice.

The dash kit is called a Turbokit 99-7501 by Metra. It screws and clips together, including the spacer and sunglass tray.

However it's too wide to go all the way into the dash in place of the U shaped metal mount that comes with the factory deck(s), so I cut the plastic side pieces vertically just behind the 4 points where the kit is to mount to the inner dash and reused the U shaped metal mount to hold the stereo. When the kit was put into the dash the 4 screws go through both the plastic facia and the metal U bracket, holding the dash kit in front and the bracket (& stereo) inside.

To cut down on rattles I put sticky foam strips above and below the deck inside the dash kit and plastic-welded the spacer and sunglass tray together inside. The installer just had to put the assembled unit into the dash - and still screwed it up!
