Unhappy Well...Might soon have a 84 GSL for sale.

I was drivin home today and when i went to shift into first..trannie ground like hell. Did same in second so i left it there till i got home..then when i went to drive into the driveway..black billows of smoke..burning rubber smells and NO ENGAGEMENT in ANY GEAR. Reverse included. Clutch feels like normall however. Well, seeing as I got $300 to my name, have no job, and my parents dont got enough for a new car..im probably sunk. My grandma has a 1966 Jaguar Mark 10 in her garage sitting there..and it atleast drives. Guess I know what ill be getting Tow-truck should be here in a bit. Im gonna go with her to the graveya..er..shop. I pray that the got a working used trannie somewhere in the 10 1st gens they got in the back.

As i was getting out of the car..i noticed something.

My odometer read 143,200.0 miles on the dot.

You can't afford a $75 junkyard tranny? Ya gotta find a way, brother! If you could find a way to get it out of here, I'd let you have the one in my driveway carcass for free...

Well. The Im gonna see what the people at the shop say first. If its JUST the trannine maybee y'all could hook me up. I'd pay $150 or whatnot for a good working one. I don't know how hard it is to install..but since I don't got acces to any type of real lift it's not feasable anyway. But..installing a trannie can't be THAT much.. maybee $400 in labor? HOPEFULLY I did'nt blow the clutch. If it's gone im really in deep ****.

And yea..it just broke in first. Well..listen to this. For the past week the trannie seemed wierd. Like..if i was driving down the road in 3rd and i flored it..the rpm's would shoot up like 3000 then slowly come down as the car accelerated.. wtf? i WAS going to drain and replace the tranny fluid today... too late

150 Tops. Not hard to change yourself. All you need is ramps and/or jackstands. A helping hand wouldn't hurt either. Aligning it back into place is the pain.

Now THAT sounds like a worn clutch. You *SURE* it's the tranny and not the clutch disc or hydraulics?

oh man that's CAKE.. I could fix your car in under a problem if it's either the clutch or the transmission. I've got the parts sitting in my garage too.

If you're going to junk it, call me before you do, I might be interested in taking it off your hands.

Well..the clutch has 20,000 miles on it. I replaced it about 3 years ago. AND..the master and slave cylinders are BOTH NEW! (replaced one a year and a half ago..the other about a year ago) So..WHY would the cluctch break? What im REAL worried about is the black smooke and the burning rubber smell. And guys..thanks for all the offers for the trannie. I think i got a job hooked up.. $9 an hour helpin lay foudnations. $120 a week (3 days of work). Installing it might be a pain in the ***... How much is a new clutch gonan cost me? Im just looking at all my accounts and what not and trying to see how much money I got.

well, from what it sound like, i'd have to go with the clutch being the culprit, too. i can't think of anything in the tranny that would smoke without any visible flames involved -

as for the price for a clutch, it's totally up to you. from your original thread, i'm guessing the car is not serioulsy modded, so a stock clutch (or aftermarket replacement) should be fine - and they are pretty cheap $ 180 for disc and plate. i would also advise changing the fluid (synthetic DOT 4) and make sure the whole system is bled ... and bled WELL!!!!

however, if it DOES turn out to be the tranny, then just get one and put it in yourself. it's a pain in the *** to align it and get the input shaft into the engine/clutch - but believe me - it's worth learning how. as Directfreak said, it would be best if you had a second pair of hands, but as long as you can get your hands on a floor jack and 2 to 4 cinder blocks (or jack ramps) - it won't be that bad.

just try to hang on to the car if you really like it, man. i know what it's like to be broke and trying to keep and Rx-7 on the road, but let getting rid of the car be the absolute last option.

good luck and keep us posted, bro!

Ok..some news. First off the trannie is real worn. They said at the shop dont expect more than a few thousand more miles out of it. What is blown is the clutch and prehaps the flywheel. They are going to take it all apart tomorrow and call me back. So..what clutch should I have them put in? As far as the trannie goes..I will wait a while. Get the clutch in then worry about it.

the major question here is what you plan to do with the car ...
if you're going to mod it a bit, then get a lighter flywheel and a mild clutch upgrade. if you just want to drive it stock, then get a stock clutch (or aftermarket replacement) and have your flywheel resurfaced. if the flywheel is too damaged to be resurfaced, then try to find a used one from somewhere.
