How many people have there air-oil mounted in front of the raid. and how long has it been there. conflicting stories apon search(some say ya some say never causes air flow to raid. to decrease). Who's done it and how long has it been successful(<--key word).

Once again thanks for everyones help!

it's been successful since 1984 when Mazda did it for the SE (maybe even before that).

I have a series 3 which currently has the heat sink oil cooler underneath the filter. I will be mounting the external oil cooler in front of my radiater in about 1 month, when ive got some more dough. I dont see it causing any problems as there used to be a huge a/c cooler thing there until i removed it and it was twice the size of any oil cooler!!! Will let you know how it goes.

also those oil cooler hoses are damn expensive...$$$$

Exactly. that's how all SE's have them. The 79-82 cars had them lined up flush with the shorter radiators.

I have it mounted under the rad 79-82 style and it works damn good. It seems like it would work better if the sway bar didn't go right in front of it but my temps are low enough.

The short radiator and oil cooler mounted flush beneath it work great IMO. For better cooling effect, remove the A/C condenser located directly in front of the radiator. That is, if you no longer need/use the air conditioning. It would be better to use the flush mounted oil cooler in case you ever decide to do a turbo setup. Gotta have room and airflow for an intercooler.

No ... only the SE models got the air-oil cooler in -84 and '85. All 12A models got the water-oil cooler.

you could try www.mazdatrix.com for bolt-on options (you have 2 options there) OR you could have them made at a local hose shop, but in my experience they never have connections for the stock fittings, so you'd probably have to switch to -10 AN fittings on the cooler and engine first.

not really as long as you can find a donor pre-84 car to take the cooler, radiator, maybe the lines, and the pedistal for the oil filter only you would have to buy is the o rings and maybe some new lines.

Incorrect. The 79-82 models got the air-cooled oil cooler. The 83-85 non-SE got the beehive (water-cooled oil cooler). But yes, the SE models got the air-cooled oil cooler as well.

Of course, if you mean that all 12A models in 84 and 85 got the beehive, then yes - you're correct. But stating that all 12A models got the beehive would be incorrect otherwise
