Cool MORE Leaks!??!!

Just had another look under my young 82/13b.... and well I found a lot of oil covered things.......

First of all though - There are two seals which I know are leaking ... PINION seal on the diff, and TRANSMISSION OUTPUT SEAL.. on the transmission (i'd hope )... I'm wondering if you reckon these leaking seals could be causing this oil.... or perhaps this oil on these surfaces is normal?

Note right at the bottom here on the bottom of the engine...

Part of the steering

Bottom of engine again... i think :P

Clearer shot of engine base

Engine base again

Not entirely sure about this... car is 4" off the ground and i stuck my arm under with cam...

So... again, the current known leaks are:
- pinion seal on diff
- transmission output seal

pretty much both ends of the drive shaft.

So hopefully these leaks make up for this oil ? .. if not, well... let me know what might me leaking! Needa get this running!!

Cheers!

You sure it isn't the oil pan seal leaking? On a few of those pictures it looks as though you should drop the oil pan and replace the gasket. But that would only account for a little bit of the oil leaking. I know my 83 is leaking from the oil pan, and the radiator... but thats a different issue there.

The oil pan gaskets rarely leak. It's more commonly the oil sender in the pan, or the oil metering pump leaking from the bottom of its gasket.

Maybe you can tell, I'm new to cars What's the bellhousing for, and what problems may arise from not having a plug... what will the plug do for me? I'm assuming you're talking about that gaping black hole in the last picture above?

Thanks mate,

It's that hole in your transmission. You're supposed to use it to inspect the flywheel. There's supposed to be a rubber plug in it. I just got a new one from the dealer for $6. You should too. If you don't plug it, something could get in there and rock around with your flywheel. Worst case scenario, it breaks apart and a chunk of the flywheel comes up thorugh the floorpan and gets you in the leg.

Also, I can't stress this enough. Clean *all* the oil off, then find out where it's leaking from by looking for fresh oil.

I'm really not sure why that bolt/pin has been welded on... "butchered" comes to mind. Only bought her couple weeks ago.

I'll get a plug for the hole there! And ill see about doing a clean underneath... Might wanna plug the hole before that though =)

I'll jack the car up tonight and get some more/better pics.. Really needa make sure everything is ok before I start work on it... gotta get priorities straight.

Thanks guys,

I've cleaned up all the oil now :-) And got some more interesting photos.

Yes! The bolt is welded to the engine... but thats not all...
My engine is welded top to bottom as well! I'm not sure this is normal?

Some nice clean welds (photo upside down):

And ... my engine... welded together!! what the hell?

At least she wont leak aye?
