do i have to disconnect the vacuum rod from the secondaries and then wire them to the throttle to actually feel the difference?
and if so..
does anyone have a write up on it with pics??
i really wanna try this mod out since its free..
thanx heaps guys

i saw no improvement with the spring removed... you actually have to disconnect the linkage, and wire the secondaries to the primaries. there is a page out there with pics, i will try to find it. if i can't, i might be able to take some pics of how i did mine. Go through sterling's writeup very carefully, and just do what it says, and you should be ok. i ran into a few problems, but nothing too crazy...
pm me if you have any specific questions.

when looking from the passenger side of the carb, it is the only linkage that is down there... on the side facing the front of the engine. it is held on by a cotter pin. no pics yet, sorry i have been lazy... anybody else?

I wish ya luck on the ricer beating... dunno what a stock 7 can do against a CRX with unknown mods... the CRX was one of the fastest Civics that was produced. My friend Jim has one and man they're peppy. I'm aiming to get my 84GS modded to beat him out (he's stock right now), but if I were you, I'd definitely make sure I do a tune up if nothing else.
There's nothing worse than taking on a Civic Ricer and losing. Filters, Plugs, Oil, Quality Low Octane Gas... But even if you don't beat him, there'll always be a next time And THEN you'll be prepared.
Oh, and if you haven't already taken out the carb... DON'T. Mech Secs don't actually give you more power, just more *control* over the power. But if you take out the carb and end up with a vacuum leak when you put it back in, you could have a hell of a time getting your car to run right at all, let alone beating a ricer.
Try without the mech secs I'd say. Others may say differently, but unless I had someone around who *really* knew the carbs on these cars, I wouldn't take mine off again. Not with the headaches I had getting it to run right after reinstallation!

I know about these Nikki carbs. Converting to mechanical secondaries is a great way for you to capture and control the potential of your carburetor. But it's only one mod. The carburetor is'nt breathing any better than it would've before. You're just telling it how to breathe.
It will take you weeks to RE-learn how to drive it to get the most performance out of your carburetor.
Another great "do it yourself" mod is the accelerator pump mod I outline in my write-up. But this is a "tunable" mod- and in fact can render all efforts to make your car faster off the line useless if it is not tuned correctly.
Tuning for the accelerator pump consists of SEVERAL trial and error runs with adjustments made in 1/2 turn increments.
-My point? You're not going to get faster overnight by doing "do it yourself" mods to your carburetor. They will all help you to be faster overall, but it requires time and patience.
